Progress they did. and with two games remaining, the Redskins found themselves in a tie for the ieague lead and a definite shot at the title. The three sophomores who presented the big question mark at the start of the season became the leading scorers and rebounders at its conclusion. was Newlin Guard Mike named the "Player of tl.e Year" in the Western Athletic Conference and was a unanimous choice for All District Seven Honors. Forward Ken Gardner hongained UPI ors and led the league in rebounding for all but the final two games of the season. Center Jim Mahler was the teams secand ond leading rehounder foui tli leading scoier. For the upcoming season, tne University of Utah should be favored to finish in the top division even though the league competition has expanded to include both Colorado State University and the University of Texas at El Paso. Gardner will see the return of eight lettermen, fout of whom started every game in the '68-6season. The only missing member of last years starting quintet will be Joe English, a 6'5" forward who was fifth in scoring and fourth in rebounding. The most likely replacement for English will be senior Walt Hawkins, a front line reserve last year. The 64" jumping jack averaged five rebounds and 5.6 points per game. All five tentative starters should be improved to make the Utes a contender for the title. 9 The major problem area will be on the bench. Additional stren-gtand depth will be needed to put the Redskins in any kind of a favorite role. I.ittle help can be expected from last years frehman team w ith only one player moving up Now Place To Call His Own Ute swimming coach Don Reddish is one of the happiest men on the campus. For the past seven years, his swimming team has had to travel throughout the city in an effort to find a pool in which to woikout and practice. In many cases. Reddish has had to arrange for as many as three different pools in one day, and when it came to intercollegiate competition, the University of Utah had no "Home Pool." Despite the tremendous hardship on coaches and swimmers, the Utes are the only team to w in a WAC sw imming title. This ye.ir, they will be going after tiieir eighth in a row. and will host the event in their own facility. The new natatorium feaures three pools. An eight lane competition pool, a six lane warmup and exercise pool and a two meter diving tank. ! tude while coaching for continhis still ued improvement, youthful charges may make a run of it. To add incentive for both coaches and players, the Redskins will move into new quarters this season with the opening of the University of Utah's new Sports and Special Events Arena. The 15,000 seat arena will be one of the finest facilities of its kind in the nation. The intersectional schedule will provide Redskin fans with some of the nations finest collegiate basketball. In summary, the University of Utah should be stronger and faster on the front line, but depth is still a question mark A lack of adequate bench strength hurt the Redskins in their bid for the WAC title last season and could have a major influence again this vear. With the addition of Colorado State University and University of Texas at El Paso to league competiton for the first time, anything could happen. The conference will definitely be stronger and the Redskins must follow suit to be a threat. the ladder. Dan Cowan, a 6'4" guard from Salt Lake City, is the only prospect. Tne lack of adeouate help from the sophomore ranks will necessitate the use of junior college transfers to back up tiie forward and post positions. As of tiiis writing, help can possibly be expected at forward from Ken Reynolds, a 65", 205 pound junior from Aurora. Colo. Ken played for the Colllege of Eastern Utah last year. The Redskins will not be a big team by any stretch of the imagination. Jim Mahler, a 6'19" post man will be the only starter to go above the 6'4" mark. Mike Newlin at guard stands 6'4" as do fot wards Ken Gardner and Walt Hawkins. The other member of the tentative starters club is guard Bob Martin at 5'11. Size, as always, could have a large buluence on the success or lack of it during season. the 1969-7Last year. die Redskins had a youthful enthusiasm that made them one of the most exciting teams in the Intermountain 0 area.
