WALT DISNEY lustful, set comedy in the 15th Century, per-Smit-h, vmm jones mDRIWCHNe ftiowooo d Aail high-stron- g, evtiiJeffonnances Jioooer, When Thomas confesses at the final curtain that t.e loves Jennet and intends rt remain committed to her, although he knows the world hasnt changed, the play ends without illusions, but on a note of cautious optimism. I have to see you home, Thomas says, although neither of us knows where it is. Marvin Smith as Hebble was the audience favorite, playing the mayor as a snivelling, impotent, perpetually astonished and indignant fool, rolling his eyes and tearing his handkerchief at every invasion of his respectability. Margaret Crowall was mar- vellous as Margaret, her economi-Stewa- rt toned, cal gestures coming off fectly Brent Robison as Mchard. '.mayor'a clerk, and Lynne Fisher as Alizon, his sweetheart, started slowly but picked up strength. Miss Fishers wholesome purity could have been cloying, but came across sincerely, as intended. Christian as the Marty impudent, impulsive Nicholas and Ron Fredricksen as his mindless brother, Humphrey, (Margarets nns) turned in particularly solid performances. Earl Nelson as the palsied chaplain and David Keysor as the nervous Tappercoom, judge with a speech impediment, worked excellently together. When the three dotty old men (the chaplain, Tappercoom and Heble) were together on stage, their combined nervous excitment was real enough to make the audience jittery. Tom Carlin as Old Snipps, the man, whom Thomas was supposed to have murdered, and whom Jennett have to was supposed changed into a dog to earn her reputation as a witch, had only one scene, but made the most of it. While he obviously steals the scene, it becomes a case of oversteal when his shouted hallelujas ultimately cover the accompanying diologue. Ballifs set of several levels is particularly functional and avoids what could have been a congestion problem on the small stage. ii Jack Lecisaba 3Vand : Herbie 7 IT!
