Parents learned this vocabulary of the drug abuser from Second District Juvenile Court Judge Regnal W. Marijuana, the most common drug among teens, is nicknamed tea, hay, grass, weed, mary warmer, pot and M," Garff said. A lid," he explained, is a small amount of marijuana, often stored in tobacco cans or small plastic bags. Reefers, joints and sticks are names for marijuana cigarettes, and the butt of the cigarette is called a roach," the judge told parents. The roach is highly prized by marijuana smokers, he said, because the plant is more condensed and concentrated in the butt. While all drugs are dangerous, heroin is where the real and the real trouble money are," Garff said. Some teens will boil cough syrup to get codeine which, like heroin, comes from the poppy plant: H? told of one man with a heroin habit. Garff said teenagers take drugs for curiosity, a sense of belonging, rebellion, a good feeling or an escape from painful experience. Some try drugs on a dare while others "feel they have the freedom to do as they please with their bodies, he said. LEADER QUALITY $125-a-da- y Both Elder Sterling W. Sill, Assistant to the Council of the Twelve, and Bishop Robert L. Simpson, first counselor in the Presiding Bishopric, centered their talks Friday on the qualities of a leader. Using the metaphor of a ship, Bishop Simpson said some people take so much energy to toot their own whistles t hat their engine stops. Enthusiasm, he said, is the ship's engine. First, I had to let producers know I was serious about writing for TV. I wasnt a publicity man any more. My first work was on Rango. Youll recall that lasted less than a season. I received minimum $500 for the script. My next job was a rewrite of a rewrite. When you polish up a script, you receive a minimum of $350. That made $850. I didnt get another job during 1966. That was my total income. If I had been paid by the hour, my rate figured out to 31 cents an hour for the time I put in on the two scripts. Skip then wrote on spec. Lucky my wife was working, he said, otherwise, we would not have eaten. Oney script was about an actor who runs for governor of California. This was before Ronald Reagan was elected governor. My agent said the producers who looked at the script said the idea was preposterous too fancifuL Another producer said he had 60 unsolicited scripts and anyway, he was leaving his series. Well, I tried Man From UNCLE, and it was cancelled before my script could be considered. I wrote an original story for Second Hundred Years, for which I received $4,000. That was my income for 1967. The next year was better. I sold eight scripts to Here Come The Brides and to The Brady Bunch, just going into production. Now they want me to write several shows in the series. The rest of the story is filled in by his colleagues. Skips income for 1969 is already in five fat figures, one of them said. He could easily go into six figures and he has more assignments than he can handle.
