Top spot in a dogs world means being named Amateur Field Champion (AFC) and Tonis Tar won that honor in recent retriever competition held In Park City. The occasion was the Great Salt Lake Retriever Club field trials in which Tonis Tar won 1st place in a field of thirty-fiv- e dogs from all over the United States and Canada. The Salt Lake trials were only the last stop in the long road to the top, though. Tonis Tar has won 1st place three times in the past two years and has placed high in field trials many times. To be named Amateur Field Champion is quite an accomplishment. A dog must have won at least one 1st place and accumulated at least fifteen and it points in competition sometimes takes years to do it. Tonis Tar is only the fifth Utah dog to ever win the AFC title. That is quite a tribute to both the dog and his owner-traineJohn Fotheringham of Granger. "This is what we have been working for, says John. "This is what we have wanted all the time. John raised Tonis Tar from a pup and entered him in his first competition when he was only 15 months old. John uses Tonis Tar for hunting as well as for competition and feels that it helps chase. have the Many people Impression that competition trained dogs do not make good hunting dogs. John feels exactly the opposite. Tonis Tar is an excellent hunting Thats a pace and e would suggest the National League champions may yet make it three in a row except that the Cubs have won 11 of 16 games during the same period for a .688 pace. Sorry about that, Red Schoendlenst, but the Cardinals have gained only two games on the leaden despite .778 two-tim- but York.
