"It's that ege-ol- d problem gals have invading any athletic realm," Mary. Lou smiled. "Only in rare instances is there that woman with the natural physical talent to invade the athletic world. "Time after time, I've watched young boys walk up to a tee and almost hiunediately develop a natural golf swing. The gates will be open at 3:00 p.m. Saturday and racing will begin at 8:00 p.m. Also on tap for this week is an evening of motorcycle racing that will bring some of the best riders in the Intermoun Utah, a series races which features three Denver cars and three Utah cars,- - will provide some of the hottest competition this area has seen this year. Coming in from Denver to retaliate for previous losses to Utah cars this year will be Mark Whiffed, John Abbot, and the Kaiser Brothers. Rather than spending his time racing around the track at speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour. he makes sure the guys who do get a fair start and race under prescribed rules without running someone (most likely himself) down. He's Jim Black, main stretch flagman at the Speedway and one of the most important parts of the weekly racing programs at the Fairgrounds. But I have watched many talented girls disappear from never having competed the competitive scene , after junior golf. "There appears to be a competitive void for gals after they leave the junior ranks. And this is a time when they should be encouraged into major, i competition the most. "There is no organized college golf for women In Utah as there is in states like Arizona. And for; some reason, the gals do not seem to take the ini4 tiative to break into competition on the Utah women's circuit. "When they do, they are heard from as in the cases of Marcia Thayne, Sue Thompson, Janet Thurgood, Dixie Wilks, and Sue Lang. "In the case of junior boy golfers, though, they invade the Utah Golf Association tour enmasse at early ages and give the veterans real 'competition. The boys are encouraged at every, turn. A good case in point is the recently organized Utah !State junior boys team championships, sponsored by the Utah Golf Association. I 1 ! , '11 I "There are exceptions, but generally a junior girl must continue to whet her competitive appe tite immediately following the' junior program or her interest in championship-calibe- r golf fades away. "You see, the competitive continuity. in 'girls golf in Utah is broken at age 17 or IS. She has been given a junior golf appetizer in talent and competitive desire. But the main course just seems to elude her. , "This is not to say that the sole purpose of the junior golf program Is to develop championship or pro golfers. Quite contrary, it is an ac- that most gals will simply becepted come oriented enough to enjoy golf as a physical and mental health outlet for later life or as a recreation source with her husband and children.
