Yet Arnies not in it yet. He missed the free rides and now must work up through two qualifying rounds. Just like anyone else. Imagine that, the top money winner in and he cant golf play in the U.S. Open, unless he lines up with the municipal pros, the leftover tour triers and earns his way in. There are six ways to get into the Open without qualifying in the playoff tournaments : 1. U.S. Open champions of the past five years. 2. The 1968 U.S. Amateur champion. 3. PGA champions of the past five years. 4. The 1968 British Open Champion. 5. The 15 low scorers in the Open and those tied for 15th place. 6. The 15 leading PGA scorers for one year ending April 30, 1969. Arnie had a chance only under No. 6. Hes missed it. By one putt! BOSTON (UP1) At their advanced age, the venerable Boston Celtics cant afford to look too far into the future. All they ran see is a game Thui mI.iv night. The deteiiding National Basketball Association champions will be gunning for their third win and a edge over the Iaikets in that upcoming game at Los Angeles after setting the stage for it with a "bad game victory at Boston Garden. who The Celtics, have reigned over the NBA for the 2 89-8- 8 past The former five U.S. Open champions arc Trevino, Nicklaus, Casper, Player and Venturi. The past five PGA winners are Boros, January, Geiber-geMarr and Nichols. Bruce Fleischer of Florida is the U.S. Amateur champion. ' The final field for the Open, to be plajed at the Champions Golf Club at Houston, will be 150 players. Aside from the men qualifying in the six categories mentioned, those who lead in playoff tournaments throughout the country will fill the other positions. Qualifying rounds are scheduled for May 19 and 20 in 41 states. Sectional qualifying will be on a sectional basis in 14 sites in 13 states June 2 and r, 3. It through these qualifying rounds that Palmer must plead for admittance. He can do it only with the clubs he has in his hands. is t . Two Sides Of The Question It can be argued from many directions that people like Palmer (and others of fame in the on game) should be given a free ticket to play reputation only. This could be done best by authorizing a special selection committee to chose five players at to take pare of people in Palmers place random this year. Certainly the tournaments are more colorful with Palmer in than some local professional from the sandgreen country of Black Hills. However, the fact that the U.S. Open has its rules for entry and that so many must come up rounds through state and sectional qualifying lends special interest, and class, to the classic. Which means most to the tournament? To have a field that Arnie Palmer couldnt cut or hae Arnie in it? Doesnt look, at this hour, like there will be exceptions made for Amie Palmer. Yet hell try for it from the bottom of the roster and all of golf will be pulling for him.
