Show ifr tew iirfif 4$m& DESERET TV NEWS, Tuesday, April 8, 1969 Highlights iiiiiiiiiniiiiiiiiiinuiniiiiiiiiniiiiiiiiiiiiiiiimiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiniN ff f 0. bir 7 Alta Site For ABC Program itifii'iiiiHiiiniiiiniiiniiiiiiiiiiiiiiiimiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiuiiiiiiii By HOWARD PEARSON Deseret News Television Editor Utahs Alta will be the focal point of a Wide World of An Sports program to be televised this month at Alta. ABC-Tcrew will arrive in Salt Lake about April 15 to prepare for broadcasting the Fifth National Gelande Contest at the Salt Lake sports center. The contest will be conducted April 18 through 20 on the big mine dump near the base of the Wildcat Lift. More than 500 contestants are expected for the event, which has grown fiom 100 contestants five years ago. Alta Ski Lifts, sponsor of the Gelande, will furnish prize money for professional class jumpers and trophies for amateur classes. Merchandise awards will be presented to winners of the new veterans class. Admission to the contest will be free to the public. Much of the action, however, can be seen from the parking lots on the road and near the Wildcat Lift. Another Controversy The Smothers Brothers incident recalls to mind some other controversies involving censorship and points out how pointless and petty they seem to be now. Major controversy in tel- evision's past probably was the W. C. or water closet Joke of Jack Paar. At the time, wire services ran thousands of words on it, far more than they are now carrying on the Smothers Channel Chuckle Brothers. I think most of us have forgotten what it was all There was the beeping incident on CBS on the Judgment At Nuremberg production, when the words were cut gas chambers out because the program was sponsored by a gas company. How silly that seems now. The control by sponsors Is more subtle now. In another field, motion "11)0 Moon Is Havt you been up in the atBlue and Man With the tic reading the old TV logs sub-jewere the golden Arm again?" of controversy, the former bemuse the word virgin was used; the latter because the theme was dope. If the two shows came out today, they would not cause a raised eyebrow. So now we have the Smothers Brothers incident. The CBS network cancelled the Brothers, presumably because they wouldnt submit their scripts to scrutiny beforehand. A lot of charges have been made by the Brothers that they have lived up to their contract and by the network that they have hot. The Brother said they would sue and then that they tvould not. They reportedly have been offered a chance to telecast their program from Canada, which would mean they could be broadcast Into many parts of U.S. ; A novel study of film producers of the future is a major highlight of television tonight. Its in the CBS Who, The Brothers have maintained they should be allowed to present unpopular opinions and divergent views. The network believes it should be allowed to censor them because the network Is responsible In the final analysis. Anyway, whether the Brothers move to Canada or to another network, even this battle will pass away. In a few weeks or months, It will be forgotten. Whatever the real truth might be, It is certain that the Smothers Brothers would not have been touched If they had maintained their ratings in the first 10 or first 15, instead of finishing with an average of 24. Also, if the hearings had not been going on in Congress over television and radio, network officials would not have paid any attetion to the complaints about the Smothers. Its just another passing storm. '- t ,WA t f' wfi, ' r ' mini-bottle- This V t-- x "ly1 t mantt). (c) danota J GIIHaaiY 7 i Huntr Caroutai. 1 Huntlay-Brlnkla- 4 Movarick it 7 (c).
