Show OGDEN 'FRISCO PORTLAND 'BIG 3' IN SHOW CIRCUIT Ogden’s Golden Spike National Livestock Show operates as a member of the “Big Three” autumn stock show circuit comprising Portland San Fran- cisco and Ogden By uniting as a circuit each of the shows is in position to draw more and better cattle entries because once the exhibitor starts showing his animals he can continue through the show without the added expense of returning his stock to home ranches between shows Dates of the “Big Three” are arranged to enable tne cattle owners to jump conveniently from one to the other three-circu- it The c£cuit begins with the Pacific International Livestock Exposition at Portland Oct 4 Next is Grand National livestock Exposition in San Fran-cisc- o v Oct 8 And then comes Ogden’s Golden Spike Show Nov train takes the show animals from Portland to San Francisco and then from San Francisco to Ogden This “Big Three” movement began many years ago and has proven one of the best promotions in the long history of western stock shows officials of the three stock shows feel 17-2- 30-No- 13-2- 1 PRODUCTION INCREASED Stilbestrol E-- lay Tests Boost Beef 4 LOGAN — In attempts to open the for increased beef production way in Utah the Utah Agricultural Experiment station has turned to irrigated pastures as an ideal source of additional feed In trials conducted this summer in Utah County experiment station researchers produced nearly 1500 pounds of beef per acre by supplementing with dry hay and implanting steers with stilbestroL g palatable grass-legum- e mixtures for irrigated pastures in Utah developed by Utah State University scientists have been widely used by dairymen including the experiment station’s own dairy farm in North Logan In 1958 Dr Lor in E Harris professor of animal husbandry Milo Dew research assistant and George Q Bateman professor of dairy husbandry launched grazing tests to determine feasibility of using irrigated pastures to boost beef production STEERS GROUPED The experimental grazing was modified this past season hen 80 bead of steers were placed on the Utah County farm near Pleasant Grove The steers were divided for purposes of the trials Into four groups of 20 each One group was restricted to pasture grazing only a second group held on pasture was implanted with 24 milligrams of stilbcstrol The third group of 20 steers was fed alfalfa nigh-yieldin- 22-ac- re Bill 'Em hay while grazing and the fourth group was pastured fed hay and implanted with stilbestrol The steers were grazed from April 20 to Sept 28 and stilbestrol implants increased the daily gain of steers receiving green feed only by 21 per cent Implanted steers given alfalfa hay in addition to pasture the increase was 26 per cent the Utah animal scientists THE OGDEN The livestock market offers mixed prospects for different kinds of livestock in the year ahead Hog prices are almost sure to be little lower the coming year This is due to a 12 per cent increase in 1959 spring-farrowe-d pigs and an estimated 8 per cent increase in 1959 fall farrowings Sonsumption ef pork will rise with lower prices but competition between meats will be a factor in reducing hog prices Total farrowings for 1959 (if fall intentions of producers are followed) will be 10 per cent greater than those for 1958 and 16 per cent above the 7 average Large farrowings are also expected for the spring of 1960 The volume of hog sales is expected to reach a peak in 1960 or the spring of 1961 Then the normal hog cycle suggests the likelihood of a reduction in hog numbers and farrowings Prices of pork and hogs have become more sensitive to changes in numbers sold This is due to the rapid expansion in hog numbers and to the fact that pork has lost consumer acceptance relative to beef and poultry Pork must again be sold to consumers and this is being done through promotion campaigns MIXED TRENDS Cattle prices are showing mixed trends which will likely become greater in the year ahead Prices of high quality feeder cat tie will likely continue strong through this fall and winter period This reflects the huge feed crop which seems virtually assured for the 1959-6- 0 feeding year The Midwest again this year with it’s large feed supplies and demand for high quality feeders is a major factor in current strong prices of top qual- - ity feeder cattle Uncertainty of long run price trends in the fat cattle market has increased the demand for good quality heavy feeder steers compared to last year and compared to lighter weight feeder cattle Current prices and price prospects suggest that prospective net returns per head are greater for heavy steers than for other weights and classes i last year College of Southern Utah had the champion Ewe and Utah State University exhibited the champion ram 1 1953 Congratulations Sponsors of Golden Spike Lamb prices reflect a problem First lamb feeders are oue to recover losses of 1958-5- 9 Feeders paid too much for lambs last fall and this coupled with turnout erf overweight fed lambs brought about substantial losses This year prices of feeder lambs appear conservative relative to prospects for prices erf fed lambs through the fall and winter market period two-fol- d Livestock Show AMDERSOM'S FARM AND GARDEN Ogden ond Tremonton Larro and Purina Feeds Success- -- GOLDEN SPIKE LIVESTOCK SHOW You Get 17 MM at a Saving When You Drive Out to Our Three Auctioneers Named for Event Modern Dairy Stores Enjoy an Auto Ride While You Save of Our CASE1!
