Show 14D 17000 Cows THE OGDEN OGDEN STANDARD-EXAMINE- UTAH SUNDAY MORNING R NOVEMBER 1 STATE CHAMBER DONATE WS9 TO PROGRAMS FOR YOUTH Puf in Dairy Both the State of Utah and the Ogden Chamber of Commerce make donations to the success of the Golden Spike Stock Show’s educational program for youth of the area The state gives $4800 to support the show’s Junior Department composed of4-- Club and Future Record Tests r More than 17000 cows are on in Utah according to the State Dairy Herd Improvement summary released by John J Barnard Extension Dairyman with Utah State University That is more than ever before fe the history of the state but there are more than SO per cent of the cows in the state not on test he pointed out Weber County Extension Agent Fay W Boyer says that for this period there were 1200 cows on test in the county This is about 15 per cent of the cows in the county being milked Prof Barnard stresses the fact that it is impossible to do a good job of managing dairy cows by guess He warns that dairying competition in the state is too keen and feed and labor costs are too high to base management on guess work THREE PROGRAMS At present there are three record programs available One of these will fit the needs of any persons who keeps and milks cows to make money” In the Standard DHIA program a supervisor visits the farm once each month and weighs the milk computes the content determines feed data and other important information for each individual cow Besides giving important management information on the cows these records are very useful in proving and selecting sires Another plan is the Owner Sampler As indicated by the title in this plan the owner himself takes the milk samples and submits them for testing along with the weights and other important information to be included on the record The records are not used in sire proving but are useful to the dairymen A third program is known as In this plan the owner merely weighs the milk from each cow and submits this Information for the record He bases his culling feeding and other management in milk weights only Production computations' are completed on the basis of average herd H test Farmers of America Chapter boys and girls Other financial help comes from Ogden Chamber of Commerce livestock commission firms Ogden Union Stockyards business and retail firms The Ogden Chamber of Commerce contributes and FFA members money that enables the market for their current realize prices about the steers and lambs when they sell them at the stock show auctions Other organizations including grocery chain stores contribute subsidy money to enable adult stockmen to obtain high sale prices at the major auctions of show week 4-- H t PRISONERS AT THE Shelby County Tenn Penal Farm wait while the mobile milker goes to work on six of their charges simultaneously GOODBY Weigh-a-Day-a-Mon- th -
