College education will cost $42,000 for your kids Allan W. Ostar has a scary story for parents of young children. Mr. Ostar, President of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, says that in just' ten years the average cost of attending a public college or university is estimated to reach $40,000. S ince more than 60 percent of Utahs high school graduates plan to attend college, that prediction should hold shocking significance to parents. Mr. Ostar reports that the cost of attending a private institution will be double or even triple that amount. But AACU isnt sitting back and making glum forecasts. That group has some suggestions to parents about how to accumulate the money to pay for the kids college. The recommendations come for College Costs: A Guide For Families. If you would like a copy, send $3 to Planning now, PO Box 2155, Washington, DC 20013. AASCU teamed with the accounting firm of Coopers and Lybrand to develop the booklet. It explains how income shifting via trusts or custodial bank accounts can accumulate funds relatively quickly because of lower tax rates. The booklet also deals with tax advantaged investments such as government bonds, annuities, IRAs and life insurance. Each investment varies significantly, depending on circumstances, and its important to be familiar with the alternatives and to know how they work, said Kaye Ferriter, tax partner with the firm.
