In an effort to promote a channel cat fishery in the area tests showed the Sevier River to be a natural habitat for the species that needs warmer river to survive. The fish were planted last year and again this year in several areas along the Sevier River between Redmond Lake and Annabella. Fishermen have caughtfish up to 12 to 14 inches this year that were planted last year so fish and wildlife personnel are excited about the future fishing prospects in the river.. Presently the river is in a stagnant state with no fish being produced in this area. There are a few mud cats but their length is limited to about 12 inches. So, according to Officer Fred Punnunizo, it was decided that channel cat be obtained from back east to be planted in the river. This channel cat species will much bigger than the mud cat get relative. It is expected that the species will go downstream and expand in the river basin. The cat fish should do well in the area as the water is close to the right temperature and the habitat good for this species. Utahs population is involved in some kind of wildlife related recreation. There were 1 26 farm accidents in Utah that year, of which 93 were caused by juveniles. There were also 22 firearms related deaths involving hunting. These figures prompted Utah DWR officials to start a hunter safety program, later to become known as the Utah Hunter Education Program. The hunter education program in Utah has been very successful. In its first full year of implementation, the program showed an immediate decline in the number of accidents and deaths in the field. Many other states have patterned their own hunter education programs after Utah.
