The DWR is currently managing Joes Valley Reservoir under a unique fisheries plan for different trout species. Not only is the reservoir stocked annually with 35,000 five inch rainbow trout, it is also stocked with splake and albino rainbow trout. All three species are excellent table fare. The splake trout is a hybrid resulting from cross breeding lake trout and brook trout. It offers anglers a larger than average fish and acts as a predator in maintaining the population levels of bluehead suckers. The recent gill net survey indicates that angling success at Joes Valley should be better than in past years. Rainbow are averaging 12 to 15 inches in length and some wild cutthroat trout weighed three pounds or more. Anglers at Joes arc reporting good success shorefishing using standard bait along the inlet of Seely Creek and adjacent to the highway near the northeast shore. Trolling is also said to be good when using needlefish, black mepps and rapalas. the 322-228- 3.
