IQftR 7 Dates changed for "Seasons of Joy" area Games Trials Athlete participation Utah Summer Games has doubled since its beginning, and th is year, the state was divided into four sections for Regional Elimination Trials to precede the games. Twenty one events will take place in the Games at Cedar City in June, but five events, basketball,, track and field, volleyball, swimming and softball, will be featured in the regional competition. The Richfield-Salin- a games for April 14, 15, 16,and April set are 21,22, 23. Media coverage will be great, as this area will be theopening event, and should receive coverage from KUTV (the media host for the 1988 Games) and a total ofl2hoursand47 minutes oflive coverage is set. Four of these hours have been reserved for the regionals. The Opening Ceremonies will be carried on KUTV. The events are divided into three divisions: mens and women scholastic - for those 17 years of age and under; mens and womens open - for those 18 to 35; and mens masters - 35 years of age or over. Not all events are carried in all divisions. In the basketball and volleyball competition, the top two teams in each division will qualify for state competition. Volleyball will not have a masters division for men. The top eight teams from soft-bal- l, including womens and mens slow pitch will qualify for the finals. In the swimming competition, the top three finishers in each region - 12 swimmers, and the next 12 fastest times from region -- 12 swimmers - pass the requirements for the finals. For track and field, all participants in the open and masters divisions must compete at the regional levels in order to qualify for the finals. The lop four athletes or teams from each region will be seeded into the main competition in June. All participants in the scholastic division will advance immediately to the finals without having to qualify in the Trials . ' The medals to.be ajwaidqciat the Utah Summer Games are regarded as the most beautiful of all the state games in America. Cast in Bronze, silver and gold, the medals feature the Utah Summer Games logo and ill be awarded at five special ceremonies in Cedar City. Locally, the Salina Chamber of Commerce donated $3,000 to a project topurchase equipment for the new North Sevier H igh School T rack and Field, so that it could be used in these events. The Sevier County District School Board added nearly $4,000, and donations in memoriam of Dan Bums, local businessman were nearly $1,500. The swimming events in this area will be held at the Richfield City Pool; Track Events in Salina at the NSHS track; Volleyball may be divided between the two areas, with softball and basketball divided as necessary. Though the deadline for registration has passed , the Comm i ttcc for the Regionals says that they will still accept registrations up to April 13. Carrie has been working in Salt Lake since she graduated from Gunnison Valley High school. She married Darrin Denton of Salt Lake. The Justice of the Peace married the couple. Family and friends of the young couple were present. The Demons will make their home in Salt Lake City. Croft and Julina Christensen had most of their family with them last week. The Wayne and Sandy Christensen family were here from Wenatchee, Washinton. there son DArrin has been in the M.T.C. prior to his departure for the Korean Mission. The Wayne Christensen family said their goodbyes at the airport on The Brent and Susan Monday. Christensen family of Circlevillc were in Mayfield off and on all week visiting with family members. Granddaughter marie Pain of Orem and granddaughter Lizcttc Lewis and baby Andrea were here from WEnatchee, Washington. Julina has been recuperating from surgery. Iris Bogh of California has been in Mayfield visiting for two weeks with the Lcs Bogh family and especially here looking after her mother Alcda E. Christiansen who is recuperating from a broken hip. Aleda was released from the hospital and is now at the Mayfield Manor getting rehabilitated from her broken Chris- tensen and David Glen Hatch. The music was wonderful and then following the concert there was a reception and you could meet the performers and also see artists from our valley and some of their work. It was a special evening. On April 4, the Gunnison TriWard presented a sacred Contata Savior of the World. Roger Young direc ted the choir and Marian Christensen was the organist. The music and the narrators were so good. Thanks to all of you for sharing your talent with us. Dortha Jensen and LaVona Bradley attended the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers Convention in Manti on Saturday. They will hold a planning meeting at the home of Helen Rasmussen on Thursday the 14th at 7:30 p.m,. We have had several people in the valley who have been ill or in the hospital. Bruce Bartholomew of May-fiel- d was sustained as second Counselor in the Gunnison Stake Presidency Sunday in Stake Conference. Bruce is the son of Mcrlcnc Bartholomew. He teaches school in Ephriam and owns the Mayfield mall. Bruce and his wife have four children. Sheila Bateman and daughter Ronda and a granddaughter were in Mayfield visiting on Sunday. The Ron and Shelia Bateman family live in Snowflake, Arizona, sheila and Ronda have just spent a week in Provo with married daughter Brenda and husband who have a new baby boy. They were on their way home to Arizona Monday. Former Mayfield resident TifPence fany age 24 was killed in an automobile accident in Trcmonton. He was buried in the Mayfield Cemetery Tuesday. His father Earl Pence is also buried in the Mayfield Cemetery. Susan Anderson took her mother, Blanch Wells, to Salt Lake over the weekend. Blanch visited with her sister and Susan visited with her daughter Vicki Manwill and husband and granddaughter. They went shopping and to church. Lola Jensen and Betty Whitlock have both taken turns being in Mayfield with their mother, Edra Vest. Edra has been ill. Betty lives in Kuna, Idaho and Lola lives in Sandy.
