But where do we get the time? Should it come from the children's reading class? Arithmetic? Geography? English? The thing to remember is that every time some organization asks for school time, this subtracts time from the childrens classes. Educators, risking the possibility of being called unfeeling people, resist the idea of giving up class time. They need every minute they can have with the students to get the days work done. Educators already have many duties to per- form in the schools. Roll call only takes three minutes, some will say. But multiply that three minutes times 180 days of school times the 315,000 students in Utah and it public schools becomes a huge block of time. Many junior and senior high teachers make several roll calls each day. Even if one of these activities requires only a few minutes of class time, we can easily see the problem. It's often difficult to understand, but schools simply cannot do all the things for children and society that need to be done. Because of that, we should remember that the real reason schools exist is to help children learn. worthwhile. 1 Manti Messenger, Thurs., Judge Tibbs Member of New Bureau Executive Secretary Utah Education Association MAILING ADDRESS Manti, Utah 84642 Outside Sanpete County after winning awards at two national livestock judging con- - by Dr. Daryl J.
