The fear that the changeover will be too rapid and that confusion will reign is a major concern and drawback to the conversion. I do not believe, as some who oppose the change are saying, that proposals to convert are a of the taxpayers, an f insult to senior citizens or sinister communist plots aimed at destroying our individuality. These attitudes support the contention that the psychological aspect of metrication can be more overwhelming than the technical aspect. The change will represent a major social and cultural change for us, but the metric system is far more sensible than our standard system of weights and measures. Once metrication has been learned, it will be much easier to relate various measurements. My apprehension rip-of- about the changeover is the tremendous cost. I feel that conversion to metrication is inevitable, but the cost will necessitate it being done over an extended period of time. Many organizations throughout the country are finding ways of working with both systems in order to gradually educate us on metrication. For example, the National Bureau of Standards announced that the National Consumer Resource Center, in conjunction with the Food Marketing Institute, are working together on a project whose primary objective is to determine what kinds of metric information would be most helpful to customers in retail food stores. In this way, the problem of transition can be facilitated by avoiding costly problems in the future. Other industries, as well as government agencies, are finding ways to make conversion simpler while keeping financial burdens to a minimum. The Federal Highway Administration recently withdrew its proposal to convert the nations highway signs to the metric system; the reason given was overwhelming public opposition. A rapid changeover could be chaotic and dangerous to drivers. However, I think this transition could and should be pursued gradually. When a highway sign wears out, it should be replaced with one containing both standard and metric measurements. In this way, the cost would be minimized and people would be slowly, but effectively, educated in one aspect of the metric system. am optimistic about and support conversion tactics that some are now employing and trust that by the turn of the century, the country will be totally converted to the metric system. I Manti mountains, the fields and the marshes in search of their chosen quarry. The enjoyment and satisfactions that will be experienced will be by those hunters impossible to measure, but unfortunately there will be some instances that will mar those pleasures. The fact is, however, that in almost every incase, those unpleasant stances could be avoided if the sportsmen would keep in mind the C 3 formula for a safe and enjoyable hunt. is common C The first sense. Accidents dont just happen; they are caused, usually by someone who momentarily forgot to exercise common sense. Think ahead and consider the consequences of your act before the fact. We are all masters of hindsight, but using good old common sense can go a long way toward that unpleasant preventing experience. Secondly, remember the secC which is caution. ond Exercise caution at all times when dealing with firearms. You cannot recall that shot once squeezed off, so be cautious and be certain of your target. And be cautious, also, with any kind of fire in the forest or field. Fire can destroy the recreational opportunities for all of us, so combine common sense with caution and prevent that incident you might wished had never happened. Eat to Learn . And it says it for some very good reasons. Like saving millions of gallons of gasoline and thousands of lives on the highways each year. But you know these reasons already. Everybody from the oil companies to the insurance companies have been talking about them for better than two years now. And some of you have been listening. Because some of you have slowed down. But there are still an awful lot of people who seem to think the 55 mph speed limit is something they can take or leave. It isn't. Its a law. With tickets and fines and the rest. Just like any other law. And just like other laws, it can do a lot of positive things. But its enforcement that gives a law a chance to work. The 55 mph speed limit is a sign of the times. And for the times. And its something weve got to start paying attention to. Not just because its a good idea. But because it's the law. repair service e Fall-tim- 6 00 p m Any style Mjej HARDWARE An influenza clinic for Ephraim senior citizens will be held October 6 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the Senior Citizens Center.
