After 61 years of socializing together, the members decided to discontinue and close a chapter in the life of a popular club in the community. The name Hopeless may seem a strange name for a club, a member says, but when the club was organized in January 1916 it was very appropriate. Several young ladies met together and decided to form a club. The name Hopeless was chosen and Geneil Brown was elected the first president. The time was World War I and many of the young men were at war, either with the National Guard or as draftees. Thurs., August 4, 1977 1 Mrs. Shirley Monson, Ephraim, has always taken an active part in both church and civic activities, but when asked she admitted that her main hobbies and interests are at home. My children are my main hobby," she laughed. When you've had nine children a lot of your time is spent cooking and caring for them. We've always enjoyed a good family relationship and weve had fun doing such things as camping and singing together." Shirley feels strongly that its the "little" things that make up a happy home: fresh-bakebread, a full cookie jar and special holiday traditions, like the Monsons' special Christmas Eve Dinner. Besides being a mother and stake Spiritual Living leader, Shirley is an active member of Campus Women. She also enjoys reading, good music and doing genealogy. The three recipes that follow are favorites at the Monson home. We lived in Arizona before coming to Ephraim, Shirley explained, and we really grew to love Spanish food. The enchilada recipe is a favorite from our Arizona days. The cookie recipes are the ones we use for special occasions, such as missionary farewells, holidays and homecomings. hopeless.
