KIM COOK/U.S. Air Force Pedro Corona, of Hadco Construction, keeps the dust down as demolition is nearly complete and Chris Fackrell operates an excavator March 9. The structure was the last scheduled for rebuilding as part of an effort to make quality housing available for base Airmen. BHMH From 1 Force Base's military families," said Mark Pace, Boyer Hill president. Once the staple of on-base housing, the old units have all been replaced with a variety of two-level and ramblerstyle homes with modern features. An Air Force contractor built the old housing units on base in the mid19605, said Harry Briesmaster, 75th Civil Engi- neer Group director. Col. Patrick Higby, commander of 75th Air Base Wing, said the once "state-of-the-art" homes had served their purpose for many years, but had begun to show their age, necessitating the new units. "This home has served Hill and finished its duty," Higby said of the last 1960s-era house standing on base. "Now it's time to knock it down." To replace the outdated homes, the Air Force entered into a 50-year housing privatization contract with Boyer Hill in September 2005. Later this year, Boyer expects to complete new construction or remodeling of 102 housing units since the 2005 contract. The new military family housing units feature several amenities, including Energy Star-qualified construction; enclosed two-car garages; large, covered front porches; central air conditioning; carpet and wood flooring; private master baths with double sinks and ceiling fans. When Boyer Hill completes the construction project, 21 historic properties on the base will have been renovated, 562 homes will have been renovated and 437 new homes will have been constructed. Boyer Hill, which is a subsidiary of Salt Lake City-based developer The Boyer Company, provides the financing, design, construction and property management of the homes for 50 years. After that period, the Air Force will take over ownership of the homes. ER REGISTER ONLINE TO PLAY THE ED KENLEY MARCH tr-r • l& t -.
