Show HILLTOP TIMES 12 TIMES October 9, 2008 'Incredible Hulk' outdoes its predecessor in do-over AROUND & ABOUT Adventure movie "Reasons," a ski movie produced by Poorboyz Productions, will be displayed Friday, Oct. 10, in two showings, 5:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. at the Weber Slate University, Wildcat Theater, Student Union Building. Tickets will be sold at the door, for $10, cash only. For more information visit the Web site at poorboyz.com. BY STEVE SALLES Standard-Examiner movie critic T here's no other way to paint it. This new "The Incredible Hulk" movie is an absolute do-over from the stylized Ang Lee "Hulk" version of five years ago. Aside from the obvious title change, Marvel has managed to put the "Incredible" back into the "Hulk," and the results are much more satisfying. Rather than lead up to the defining gamma radiation blast that eventually explained the Hulk's behavior in the earlier film, this one hits the ground running with an homage to the opening credits of the late-70s TV show by getting all that back-story stuff out of the way in the first few minutes. Then we find that Bruce Banner (Edward Norton) has gone into hiding in the favela hillside slums of Rio de Janeiro. He stays under the radar by working as a simple day laborer at a guarana bottling plant. He's learning rage control breathing methods from a martial arts master and has gone five months without incident In his off hours, he corresponds with an American scientist, "Mr. Blue," in search of a cure for Marvel Enterprises his gamma dilemma - but so far, nothing. U.S. Army General Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross (William Hurt) has been scouring the planet looking for Bruce, and his break will come when a drop of Banner's tainted blood accidentally shows up in the soda bottle of an unfortunate consumer in America (fun cameo). The chase is on, led by a veteran special ops soldier, Emil Blonsky (Tim Roth), who is not the hunting/killing machine he once was. But after he gets his first peek at the power of the Hulk, he wants to take the super-soldier serum himself and match up with the big fella. It will turn out to be an arrogant, "abomination" of a strategic move. Banner will find a common ally in his old girlfriend, Betty (liv Tyler), who seems to be the only one who can reason with the savage beast. This Hulk looks much more menacing now, and once Blonsky's Abomination reaches full strength, you can rest assured that you will witness a battle royal between the behemoths that rivals "Iron Man." And speaking of Tony Stark, he does make a brief, but memorable, appearance near the end of the film, alluding to more Marvel movies on the horizon (by the way, the assembled crowd went nuts). With this movie The Incredible Hulk has redeemed himself and now at least deserves to stand with the rest of the big cartoon kids again. "Both programs stress the same principles — eat smaller portions, avoid breaded foods," he said. Chervanik gave 100 percent dedication to his new fitness and diet program. "My problem is I won't stop!" he said. "Everyone keeps telling me 'Slow down, you don't have to do all that/ and I say, 'I do!' They say I am obsessed about it." When Chervanik began his fitness program, he struggled to walk three miles, each day. Today he easily logs five to eight miles every day and'finds every mile enjoyable. "I forget how long I'm out tnefe sometimes. I get somewhere and go, *Wow, I've gotten this far already?' I just keep putting one foot in front of the other and just keep plodding!" He recently received the Wellness Program gold coin for earning 15,000 motivation points, which is the highest level of points possible in the program. In the Wellness Program, members receive points for completing healthy tasks, such as taking a class offered by the HAWC or eating a serving of fruit. ' "There aren't many people who have reached 15,000 points," Chervanik pointed out. "Even though I finished the program, I'm going to keep going." He would like to work towards earning 25,000 points, but so far the Wellness Program does not have incentive awards for that high number of points. He also plans to enter in 5K walk/run races next summer and wants to add weight train- I ing to his fitness regime. ,, Chervanik doesn't want to keep his newfound success to himself. He believes that everyone at Hill AFB can benefit from joining the Wellness Program. "I think everyone should join it. Whether they are the perfect weight, or overweight, it is a fun hobby.
