BY JOANNE RUMPLE W the first sergeants and commanders of those deployed. "This is really a great atmosphere," said Tina Westerguard, Kurt's wife. "Everyone here is in a different situation, but in a way we are all going through the same thing — we all have family who won't be home for the holidays. It helps a lot when you can actually interact with people who are dealing with the same kind of things you are." According to Kristina Webecke, whose husband, Andrew, is a Utah National Guard member serving in Iraq, the perspective her five children gained at the event was enough reason to attend. "Deployment can be incredibly hard to deal with sometimes — especially for the kids," she said. "When they can come here and meet other kids who have parents who are gone, it makes a huge difference. They realize they aren't alone." Jim Hagemier, a member of Hill's Security Forces unit, doesn't have any immediate family deployed, but attended the event with his wife and two children as a volunteer. "The Security Forces unit members are very sensitive to what families go through during deployment, so anytime something like this happens, we try to be involved," Hagemier said. "We can associate with this, and we've felt what it's like to be deployed. This is a huge morale booster for the families at home and the troops overseas, so we thought we would come and help out." Tech. Sgt. Jennifer Lyon helped organize the event with Hill's 75th Mission Support Squadron and the Hearts Apart Group, an Air Force wide program designed to help military families with separation issues. Lyon said aside from the emotional connection families get from meeting their contemporaries, providing relief from daily activities is also a big morale boost. "A lot of times, for those that are left behind, day-to-day stuff can kind of get away from them," she said. "With this event, families can come in and have a nice meal that . they didn't have to cook, they don't have to clean up any dishes — they can just forget about the day-to-day grind." Lyon said organizing the event is a lot of work, but seeing the smiling faces of military families as they walk out the door makes all the effort worthwhile. "Sometimes, things like this can be kind of like organized chaos," she said. "But when you see how the families are affected in such a positive way, it makes it completely worth it." Air Force officials agree that sending holiday packages to deployed troops is important in this time of war. "Mail Call can be the best part of the day for our deployed military service members, especially around the holidays. With more of our young men and women serving overseas, making sure their mail arrives on time is important to all of us," said Pentagon spokesman Lt. Bashon Mann. U.S. Postal Service officials say 20 million pounds of mail will be shipped to military installations overseas this holiday season and the deadline for getting them out on time is quickly approaching. rnn's *;.;-; ballet west's The Nutcracker T,rn,rn..- Friday;'November 23, 2007, 7:00 p.m. "'Saturday, November'24, 2007 - 2 & 7:00 p.m. 1 Val A.
