"The responses (of the people) were real, questioning, wondering, cooperating, worshiping. We can relate to them because God comes to us every day. We stand in the shoes of those who first heard that Christ was coming," she said. Such well-known Christmas carols as "Joy to the World," "The Little Drummer Boy," "Away in a Manger," "Joy to the World" and "Silent Night" are among those included. "Sing Noel" is presented with "African Noel" and "Go Tell it On the Mountain" is also featured. "It's become an expectation, a Hill Chapel tradition," said Father Carl Wright, lead base chaplain. "The cantata is designed specifically to emphasize the celebration of the birth of Christ. It is performed by Team Hill members who are active duty, retired and civilian employees. "The choir is composed of the widest possible variety of Team Hill members," Wright said. "We have a tradition of performing in the chapel, but also in the community, in local nursing homes," and in LDS wards and services of other faiths, he said. "It's a community event, a different cantata every year," Wright said. "The choir is interdenominational, with Catholic, Protestant, LDS, Baptist, Holy Rollers. It's a wonderful time for folks to come together, all of one accord. "We don't do that very often at Christmas," he said. - Harrell and her husband, Bob, moved to Utah in 1967. He was in the military and later retired and worked at the base. "I was asked to do the choir about 25 years ago," she said. "I'm the music director for the Catholic Church, although I'm not Catholic," the Rocky Mountain, N.C., native said. "You go where you're needed."
