Changes ahead in the Pacific BY TOM BUSSELBERG Standard-Examiner Davis Bureau tbusselberg@standard.net H ILL AIR FORCE BASE — Some major changes are coming in the vast area of Pacific Command, which involves strong support from the Air Force and the other military services. That's the word from Jewel Lee Kenley, Utah's sole member of Defense Orientation Conference Association Inc. This nonprofit organization, in which members pay their own transportation and other expenses, was created in 1952 to continue a tradition started four years earlier by the Secretary of the Defense. It is intended as a way for individuals from across the nation to learn more about the nation's Armed Forces and issues related to national security. Invitations are limited to those who are not a national politician, career military or businessperson seeking contracts with the Department of Defense. "Due to treaties with Japan, we will be moving our military out of Okinawa," Kenley said. In partnership with Japan, some 8,500 Marines will be transferred to Guam, Courtesy photo The Air Force is providing a pivotal role in the Pacific Command. That includes missions by the C-17. Families gather at Hill Air Force Base to assemble packages for their loved ones and to support each other BY MITCH SHAW Standard-Examiner davis Bureau H ILL AIR FORCE BASE - One of the hardest parts of a military deployment is being away from family and friends during the holidays. •--.•• ". r To help combat this expected hardship,' '*] the Hill Air Force Base Airman and Family Readiness Center hosted a family holiday, care package drive on last week. A large gathering of military families from all over Utah organized letters and care packages for their deployed loved ones to , enjoy during the holidays. Boxes of items donated by Hill Air Force Base personnel were lined up on tables for families to pick from. Personal hygiene items, pillows, sheets, games, magazines and even gum and sunflower seeds were up for grabs. But according to Adam Westerguard, the most important reason to attend was simple — the food. "I came here to eat," said the 7-year-old son of Hill Master Sgt. Kurt Westerguard, who is currently deployed in Afghanistan. In addition to supplies for the care packages, Hill also provided a Thanksgiving dinner for the families, which was served by ILL AIR FORCE BASE — Excerpts from this year's Base Chapel Cantata will be performed at 2 p.m. Saturday as part of the Kaysville Nativity celebration at the Kaysville LDS Tabernacle, 198 W. Center. "On This Very Night" is the cantata theme, which choir director Mavis Harrell describes as "upbeat, just Christmas." The HAFB Inspirational Choir will perform during that hour, as well. The base chapel performance will be 7 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2, and will feature the cantata in its entirety, which is just over one hour in length. The cantata will be a centerpiece for the service, which will also feature other elements, as well. A Christmas cantata has been hosted by the base chapel for about a quarter of a century, Harrell said. "The thing I like about it is that it's so upbeat, and it has not been a real difficult piece to learn." She said that many of the 30 members in the choir "just like to sing." The cantata was created by Karla Worley and arranged by Lari Gross, and it carries the message that with Christ's birth, "everything changed. God is among us," Harrell said. "We celebrate Emanuel, God with us. We must remember that God came to real people, and that this had real implications in people's lives," Harrell said.
