Show ftMES 11 HILLTOP TIMES June 21, 2007 Water report Club Hill to host retiree appreciation High marks in report for base H2O supply event June 29 BY CHARLES FREEMAN 75th Air Base Wing Public Affairs Retirees from the local area as well as those from the southern portions of Idaho, Wyoming and eastern Nevada will converge on Hill Air Force Base June 29 for an annual appreciation event. "Each year, Hill sponsors a Retiree Appreciation Day/' said Col. (retired) Corless Mitchell, director Retiree Activities Office. "This day is set aside to honor and pay tribute to our retirees and their spouses." The,.event is scheduled to start at the Club Hill ballroom at 7:30 a.m. and will conclude at 3 p.m. Currently, there are more than 18,000 military retirees residing in the area surrounding the base. The primary mission of the RAO at Hill AFB is to ensure that military retirees receive their entitlements and benefits. "They have worked hard and sacrificed much in the pursuit of freedom and consequently, the Department of Defense has set forth a Retiree Activities Program that provides an infrastructure of offices and councils to support our military retirees," said Mr. Mitchell. All retirees are encouraged to take advantage of the services that are offered. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. This year's guest speaker is Maj. Gen. William Matz Jr., president of National Association of Uniformed Service and comments from Col. Scott Chambers, 75th Air Base Wing commander. There will also be many representatives from base organizations as well as exhibits by health care professionals from the community. In addition, as in years past, there will be drawings for door prizes throughout the afternoon. "We are experts in helping retirees solve problems," said Mr. Mitchell. "We can help with information, and provide direction as to where the retiree may find help and support that is being sought." Following the appreciation, retirees are invited to join other Team Hill members at the base's Centennial Park for the annual Salute to Our Nations Defenders Picnic which kicks-off at 3 p.m. The free picnic is sponsored by the Top of Utah Military Affairs Committee and has been held annually for several years to recognize the sacrifices made by military members and their families. The ROA office is located in Bldg, 150. For more information call 777-5735. "We are held to strict drinking water standards set forth by the EPA and the State of Utah," said Lieutenant Talarico. Drinking water sources include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs and wells. As water travels, it dissolves naturally occurring minerals and can pick up substances resulting from the presence of animals or from human activity. To ensure safe tap water, the EPA limits the amount of certain contaminants in water provided by public water systems. The drinking water might contain small amounts of some contaminants, though the mere presence of contaminants doesn't necessarily indicate that the water poses a health risk. According to the report, the Hill AFB public water system received no violations during 2006. Hill AFB serves a population of approximately 24,000 people and receives most of its drinking water from deep wells located on the base. "When demand increases in the summer, we may potentially use water from Weber Basin Water Conservancy District," Lieutenant Talarico said. Weber Basin gets its water from deep wells located several hundred feet below the ground surface, the Weber River and several creeks along the Wasatch Front. A copy of Hill AFB's report and Weber Basin's Water Quality Report are available for viewing at the base library, Bldg. 440, and at Bldg. 249. Squadron bioenvironmental engineers, perform water tests on drinking water from Hill Air Force Base. Hill AFB's water supply received good reviews in a (Submitted by the 75th Bioenvironmental Engineering Flight) Consumer Confidence Report, an annual evaluation of the quality of water. Hill Air Force Base's water supply got high ma/ks in a soon-to-be published Consumer,Confidence Report; a yearly "report card" that discusses the quality of the base's drinking water system. The 75th Aerospace Medicine Squadron's Bioenvironmental Engineering Flight will publish the report for Hill AFB by July 1. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency requires all drinking water system managers write a report like this each year. "Our drinking water meets or exceeds both state and federal drinking water standards for water quality," said 2nd Lt. Justin Talarico, a bioenvironmental engineer with the 75th Bioenvironmental Engineering Flight. The enivironmental flight routinely samples Hill AFB's water to ensure it meets state and federal standards for drinking water. This sampling occurs at least weekly on the base and is done under the direction of the Utah Department of Environmental Quality. Several contaminants tested for include: microbial con- alpinechurch ii coming to RIverddle.
