Show TIMES 3 HILLTOP TIMES June 21, 2007 Medical professional addresses HPV BY TECH. SGT. JENNIFER BULLOCK A 19th Medical Group Public Health What is human papillomavirusand why is there a vaccination for it? According to the Center for Disease Control there are 40 different strains of the HPV virus and about 20 million people infected with HPV in the United States with about 6.2 million new infections reported each year. The problem is HPV can lead to cervical cancer, the second leading cause of cancer deaths in women around the world. Researchers say virtually all cervical cancers, more than 99 percent, are caused by certain high risk strains of HPV that can lead to abnormal cell changes. About 10,000 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer every year in the U.S., and 3,700 die from it. The HPV vaccine that is now available protects against the four major types of HPV and is routinely given to girls 11-12 years old. The vaccine can also be given to girls as young as nine and to 13-26 year olds who have not been previously vaccinated. The HPV vaccine consists of three shots given over a 6 month period. The length of vaccine protection is currently not known; however, studies have followed women for five years and found that they are still protected. It is important for the vaccine to be given before the first sexual contact so that it can then prevent almost 100 percent of disease caused by the four types of HPV. Even though protection from the vaccine is expected to be long lasting, women need to continue to be screened for cervical cancer since the vaccine does not protect against all forms of HPV. To receive the HPV vaccine at the Hill Air Force Base immunization clinic; women must be a registered Tri-care Prime enrollee. For more information about HPV and the vaccine visit www.cdc.gov/std/HPV/ default.htm or talk with a primary care manager. Pholo by \z\ Li Bolh W Ready to launch Tech. Sgt.
