Show SPORTS 40th year of competition Running trail receives lights for Hill golf league Hilltop Times November 23, 2005 BY SHAD WEST Hilltop Times staff BY AIRMAN 1ST CLASS CLAYTON MURRAY Hilltop Times staff course. Major layout changes have been avoided, but different upgrades have taken place since the league began. One of the most significant changes is the overhaul of the sprinkler system. "When they took the pond out of hole number 14 and moved it to 5 they designed all of the sprinklers to come from that source," said Clark. "That's good because it improved the conditions of the green and that makes the game more enjoyable." Several sets of tees have been installed Autumn, often signaling the end of wearing shorts and sunny weather, has finally arrived. With the end of the warm weather comes the end of the golf season here at Hill. This year's cup acknowledges not only that, but more importantly it is the end of the 40th year of competition. The champion this year is the 'Automates', and they proudly showcase their trophy. Since the trophy's induction, they have had their name printed on it three times. Dave Clark, formerly of Data Automation, also celebrated 40 years of golf with the Hill AFB golf league. He is the only remaining original member of the league and has competed in over 800 matches. Roger Johnson and Dennis Parry, who are other members of the team, have spent nearly 35 years with the league. Work began on the golf course in 1963 and shortly after it was completed a golf league was established. Each year teams compete in a series of games and tournaments from spring until fall. The $160,000 project is slated for completion Dec. 31, but base officials said that while inclement weather may push that completion date back, construction won't hinder use of the trail. "However, runners need to be aware of the trenching and construction workers on the side of the trail." To hook up the lights with existing utility cables, workers will have to trench across the driveways leading in and out of the FamCamp. Traffic in and out of the complex will not be impeded. Once the project is complete, runners will have more nighttime option to include the trail and the new outdoor running track.
