Show 10 SPORTS Showcasing their skills Hilltop Times October 6, 2005 Hill youth participate in NFL competition STORY AND PHOTOS BY SHAD WEST Hilltop times staff Devin Frenette was one of dozens of children who turned out at Centennial Park Saturday for the National Football League Punt, Pass and Kick competition to test his arm and legs for strength and accuracy and to compete for a chance to attend an NFL playoff game. Frenette, 9, like most boys his age dreams of becoming a professional football player when he grows up. A fan of the Michigan Wolverines and the New England Patriots, he says he'll represent the latter in a Super Bowl some day. Participating in the Hill competition was the first step in realizing his dream. "I play two-hand touch football at school," he said before the event, "and passing will be my strongest event." The NFL Punt, Pass and Kick program is a national skills competition for boys and girls, where they compete separately against their peers. The youth compete in four age divisions (8-9, 10-11, 12-13, and 14-15) against each other in punting, passing and place kicking in a fun and engaging forum. The program is free - both to organizers, who host local competitions, and to every youngster who wants to participate. Children who placed in the top three of their age category received a certificate and a ribbon, and the winner in each age group won a chance to compete at the regional level. Frenette and Garcia were two of the winners that will advance to the regional competition at Utah State University. "Our winners will compete in Tremonton," Youth Sports director Garry Navas said. "If they continue to win, they have an opportunity to attend an NFL playoff game and get national recognition." While everything at this level is free, Navas said there may be costs associated if a child continues to advance. "If the kids continue to win at each event, parents will have to pay for travel and lodging costs to each competition," Navas said. Established in 1961, the punt, pass and kick program is the oldest youth football program and has more than four million boys and girls from around the country taking part every year from July through January. The event is billed as one of the world's largest youth sports participation programs.
