The award recipients and their guests were escorted to various sites in Salt Lake City, capped by a Utah Jazz basketball game. This special event began with a trip the Utah State Capitol Complex. The Airmen and civilians were introduced to Governor Jon Huntsman, Jr., in his conference room. The governor expressed his pride in the nation's servicemembers and was especially proud to welcome the wing's annual "best of the best," he said. After a photo with Governor Huntsman, the entourage went to the famed Lion House Restaurant. The Lion House, also known as the Beehive House, was the home of Brigham Young, president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the 1800s. He was also the territorial governor through Utah's statehood. Following lunch, the group went to Welfare Square, an LDS church complex wherein food, products and services are provided for the needy, both domestic and international. The entourage took a guided tour of the facilities. The tour began with a brief video-clip of the Welfare Plan of the LDS church, then a walk-through of the storehouse (where the needy are issued food, clothing and household allotments). The group toured the warehouse, the cannery (where members of the LDS church bottle and can the farm-grown fruits and vegetables), the employment services center, and the thrift store. The group then went to the dairy processing plant to sample the chocolate milk and cheese. Welfare Square employs a core group of workers but the bulk of work is performed by volunteers. The products bottled or canned cannot be purchased in any store; however, volunteers are permitted to purchase some of what they canned. The group continued their sightseeing excursion to the LDS Humanitarian Center. The former WWII munitions manufacturing plant has been converted to a used-clothes processing, sorting and distribution center for donated clothes. These sorted clothes are primarily shipped internationally. This center also puts together emergency health, hygiene and education kits for individual or group uses. The group continued its trip to the LDS Temple Square and Conference Center with a quick tour of the building grounds and Assembly Hall, and then over to the Family History Library. This library houses and maintains genealogy data for people to research their heritage. The tour participants received a CD- Courtesy photo The 388th Fighter Wing 2004 Annual Award winners and their guests pose for a photo In front of one of the many Salt Lake City landmarks they toured during their "Night on the Town" Feb. 11.
