Show SPORTS Hangar Rats win basketball title 8 Hilltop Times February 24, 2005 BYjSHADWEST... Hilltop Times start The Hangar Rats beat the 388th AMXS 59-52 to win the base basketball championship Friday night at the Hess Fitness Center. However, the Rats would show up not knowing who they would play for the title. They could only sit back and watch AMXS and the Bldg. 843 Ruff Ryders battle for the right to play in the championship match. Hangar Rat captain Mike Muncy showed up for the qualifying match and could only guess who would play his team, "We would match up better against Bldg. 843," said Mr. Muncy. "Number 15 for AMXS would limit our ability to drive to the net, something we like to do." Number 15 is William "Stretch" Griffith, and his presence had been felt all tournament long as he sat in the lane preventing penetration under the net on defense, and was fed the ball on offense for the quick inside shot from that same position. Stretch led his team in scoring during the whole tournament and scored 22 points against the Ruff Ryders to help them advance to the championship game 72-56. Glendon Chancey had an exceptional night for the Ruff Ryders, scoring 31 points in their losing effort. With the championship matchup decided, the Hangar Rats would only need to win one game for the title. An AMXS win would force the "if game. The first half of the game was a tight one as both teams felt each other out, playing conservatively. The Rats were up 23-20 at half time. The second half of the game started out much the same way, with the teams matching each other point for point. With 10 minutes to go in the game the score was tied 36-36. AMXS began to pull away 4136, but the Rats tied it up 41-41 with five minutes left. In the end, AMXS pulled out the win 56-43 to force the "if game. There wasn't a better position for AMXS to be in Thursday night, they won three games to stay alive and play Friday. It was a situation they knew all too well. "I wouldn't say it is easy to play six games in 24 hours," Stretch said, "but we figured if we got this far and beat them once, we could beat them twice." The first half of the "if game was all Rats as they led for 19 minutes. AMXS took the lead on two free throws with a minute left, and the half ended 22-21, AMXS. The Rats took control of the game in the second half and went on to win it 59-52, securing another championship. "I don't know what it is about the Hangar Rats," Stretch said, "It may be the fact that they play together in every sport; they are definitely a dynasty." The basketball title is the third title for the Rats this year. They won the Softball and football championships last year, and took their first dodgeball tournament title in November. For William "Stretch" Griffith, it was another great tournament that ended a little short "The same thing happened last year against 'Force'," Stretch Photo by Shad West said. 'There was a lot of presHangar Rat Robert Zepeda collides with William "Stretch" Griffith as he attempts a sure and a lot of games, but lay-up during the Intramural basketball championship Friday night. The Hangar Rats won the championship by defeating AMXS 59-52 In the "If" game. we'll try "again next year." EMBRY-RIDDU AERONAUTICAL UNtVERSfTY Registering Feb 28 - Mar 11 th Dodgeball, a lesson in integrity BY CHIEF MASTER SERGEANT PAUL H. WESELOH Manas Air Base MANAS AIR BASE, Kyrgyzstan (AFPN) — The sidelines erupt with yells of "He's out," or "She crossed the center." The players look to the referees for a call, "Am I out or not?" Dodgeball games at the fitness center are an integrity-based game. There are obvious hits, but the majority of hits require the player to self-identify a hit and step Out of the game. While watching a game recently, I thought how this was a classic Air Force core-values lesson on Integrity First. Integrity is a character trait. It is the willingness to do what is right even when no one is looking. It is the "morale compass." It is the inner voice; the voice of self-control; the basis for the trust imperative in today's military. Integrity is the ability to hold together and properly regulate all the elements of a personality. A person of integrity, for example, can act on conviction. Aperson of integrity can control impulses and appetites. But integrity also covers several other moral traits indispensable to national service. • COURAGE. A person of integrity possesses moral courage and does what is right even if the personal cost is high. • HONESTY. Honesty is the hallmark of the military professional because in the military, our word must be our bond. The bottom line is we don't lie, and we can't justify any deviation. • RESPONSIBILITY. No person with integrity is irresponsible; a person of true integrity acknowledges his or her duties and acts accordingly. • SELF-RESPECT. To have integrity also is to respect oneself as a professional and a human being. A person of integrity does not behave in ways that would bring discredit upon him or herself or the organization to which he or she belongs. Look at the impact that alleged steroid use is having on Major League Baseball and the integrity of the players and records involved. • HUMILITY. A person of integrity grasps and is sobered by the awesome task of defending the Constitution of the United States of America. As we engage in the war on terrorism and represent our service and our country, do it with Integrity First, followed by Service Before Self and finally Excellence In All We Do.
