Lords Prayer Some Argue Rigid Pacifism Others Look for Just Cause Millennium Others using those same principles insist that the criteria that justify going to war are not present in this situation Still others maintain that an attack no matter what the provocation could never be justified When it comes to justifying or condemning military force morality it seems is in the eye of the beholder tradiAccording to part of the just-wa- r tion violence is justified if more good than harm is the result But Christian pacifists insist that in acts of war harm always outweighs any potential good Violence is wrong thats just not an option said Ed Epp director of the Middle East desk for the Mennonite Central Committee a relief and development agency Epp was at Bethel College in North New BY TOM SCHAEFER THE WICHITA EAGLE What if the current agreement between the United Nations and Iraq fails? Would n this nation rooted in principles be morally justified in going to war? It depends on whom you talk to within the various Christian traditions Some Christians relying on fourth-centur- y principles that determine what constitutes a just war contend that such an attack could be justified because Iraq remains a threat to peace and security in the Middle East and in the world Judeo-Christia- ton Kan last week for an annual board meeting of the Central Committee During the two day conference the board issued a letter to Mennonite and Brethren in Christ churches as well as other churches stating its opposition to military action against Iraq and restating its opposition to all war and killing The letter Epp said reflects the views of most Mennonites Pacifism is part of the confession of faith he said That doesn't mean peace is just an absence of war It means working positively and practically to bring solutions Mennonites represent the historic tradition of pacifistic Christianity rooted in the 16th century that opposes all violence including serving as soldiers BY KATHERINE KAPOS THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE SANDY A painting of Jesus his brown hair flowing as if in a breeze hangs just above the principals computer at Blessed Sacrament Elementary On the opposite wall sits a collection of more than 60 clown figurines Some are cloth others are ceramic and plastic One rides a bike another sits inside a snow globe The two displays represent the best of what Sister Catherine Kamphaus will bring to her new assignment as superintendent of Utahs Catholic schools a devotion to religion and education g pertopped off with a sonality and sense of humor Kamphaus who has been the principal at Blessed Sacrament for three years was named superintendent earlier this month by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Salt Lake City which encompasses the state When she assumes the post on July 1 she will oversee 13 schools that span from Ogden to Price and educate more than 4100 students Kamphaus replaces Father Joseph Mayo pastor at St Fran See A JUST WAR Page fun-lovin- I 3v C-- 3 LOS ANGELES TIMES LONDON The Lords Prayer one of the cornerstones of Christianity has become the focus of a religious donnybrook pitting traditionalists against modernists in Britains official Church of England Should prayer use powerful rhetorical language or should it be simple direct and accessible? That is the question facing leaders of the Church of England and being echoed in other Christian denominations around the world also seeking ecumenical agreement and a common Lords Prayer for the new millennium Judging it an investment in the future a synod of British bishops meeting in London this month to accept a modern voted 272-6version for new church prayer books It is important that we agree on a Lords Prayer that can be taught to children It embodies the values that bind society said Canon Stephen Oliver at St Pauls Cathedral here The prayer which Christians believe is the only one that Christ himself taught is taken from the gospels of Matthew and Luke 8 cis Xavier in Kearns Mayo was asked to take on the superintendent job in addition to his other responsibilities on a temporary basis almost four years ago It is definitely time for a fulltime person to be here Mayo said Kamphaus believes her toughest task as superintendent will be to keep tuition affordable while at the same time finding enough money to provide teachers with reasonable salaries At present elementary school tuition runs about $2400 a year for the first child and less for each child after that But tuition does not cover the full cost of a parochial education Kamphaus said teaching in Catholic schools is seen more as a ministry than a job yet she still believes it is important to keep teacher salaries around 80 percent of the average being paid in public schools Adding to the principal of each schools endowment fund is a way of keeping all those things in check she said Within the next year Kamphaus also will oversee the opening of two new schools in Draper: St John the Baptist Updated for But some Christian churches that historically have not opposed every war spoke out in recent weeks against attacking Iraq On Feb 12 seven US Catholic cardinals sent a letter to President Clinton stating their grave concern about the possible use of force and saying it would be exceedingly difficult if not impossible to justify any military action Four days later the National Council of Churches representing 33 Protestant Orthodox and Anglican church bodies did the same In a news release the council stated in part: Historically many of our churches have affirmed the defensive use of military power and even its deterrent value in a sin- -
