Show B2 The Salt Lake Tribune CLOSE TO HOME UTAH Saturday February 28 1998 Y Disciplines Professor Who Admits Plagiarizing BY DAN EGAN THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE A Brigham Young University professor has confessed to plagiarizing from several scholars while writing material he used in his class on Mormon Church history The professor Bruce Van Orden also acknowledged that some of that material made its way into his 1996 book Building Zion: The Latter-DaSaints in Europe Van Orden said it was a mistake and BYUs associate academic vice president Jim Gordon characterized Van Ordens actions as unacceptable carelessness but not outright theft It was unintentional but it was plagiarism Gordon said It is the second time in less than two years that a BYU scholar has been accused of plagiarism In 1996 President Merrill Bateman denied he plagiarized but promised to be more careful in giving proper credit to authors he quotes The apology came af y ter charges he had stolen phrases and ideas from author Gertrude Himmel-far- b and used them in his inaugural address Gordon said professor Van Orden had been disciplined but not fired He would not comment further Van Orden said his mistakes started in 1989 while he was preparing reading material for a course on church history He started compiling and rewriting work from other authors and that material eventually formed a course packet for his students Some of it was subsequently put into his book The problem Van Orden said was that he did not keep track of what was his and what was borrowed I did not intend to pawn off on the scholarly community my students or the readers the idea that I had done the original research about in all of the worlds regions Van Orden wrote in an apology to appear in a spring edition of the Journal of Mormon History Mor-monis- m Hey the sooner he learns to crawl the sooner hell learn to walk The sooner he learns to walk the sooner he can mow the lawn Faces Ex-Co- p I did fall prey however to the zeal to share materials I had distilled from others research without tenaciously following the principles that I had learned in graduate school to avoid all forms of plagiarism The plagiarism was discovered by a scholar in Australia who saw some of her work published over the Internet under Van Ordens name Belgian scholar Wilfried Decoo who reviewed Gordons book in 1996 in the Journal of Mormon History brought the incident to the attention of the academic community I am satisfied with the explanation that it was inadvertent said Decoo He is quoting and he is citing his sources but he failed apparently to quote and cite sufficiently Journal of Mormon History editor Lavina Fielding Anderson agreed that Van Ordens problem was bad work not thievery It was comparatively easy for us to differentiate between his motives which we accepted as innocent and his UTAH BRIEFS scholarly methods in these instances which we deplored Fielding Anderson wrote Decoo said proper attribution is a problem in the Mormon history community but not because people are trying to lay claim to work that is not their own Weve become a little bit lax on attribution and copyrights because of the good cause were engaged in said Decoo Its not malicious it is the excitement to share material with others Fellow BYU professor Richard Jensen was one of the 11 people Van Orden poached paragraphs from He said he said he did not feel violated but felt real pain at seeing this field of inquiry muddled He also noted that he had read Van Ordens book and initially did not recognize it contained some of his own work Obviously I was in agreement with the material he plagiarized from me Jensen said It sounded pretty good City Council members could get bigger starting in July The citys
