Hooray!" shouted every boy there and they started toward home to talk with their mothers Before 7:30 next morning 10 boys were assembled at the meeting place waiting for Earl "Here he comes!” shouted one of the boys Earl came up looking very tall and camplike in his hiking clothes "Is everybody ready?” said Earl as he came up to the bunch "Sure!” came a chorus of boys "Well let's see now” said EarL ‘‘Has everyone his lunch?” Everyone had as might be expected from boys "Everyone got car fare?” Everyone had They rode to the end of the car line which left about two miles to walk After their ride on the trolley the boys were glad to get out and walk "How’s the air?” asked EarL "Great!” shouted the boys “How's the sunshine?” “Great too” came the answer “How about having a little game as we go along?” Earl asked "Greater still!" put in the boys "O K Everyone look around for about 10 pebbles” said Earl We’ll make it a pace to see who will be first to get his” Such a scuttling and scampering there was on that little road Jim ran up first and received a pebble for a reward Birds and Blossoms "When I say 'Go' ” said Earl “we shall start down this country road You are to watch for anything in bloom or for any kind of a bird Whoever does see one of them must raise his hand and say ‘Score’Then we all stop The person who says 'Score’ shows the others what he has found He gets two pebbles for finding the article and if he knows the name he gets one more No one can yell out the name but comes to me and whispers it- - If others can guess the name they get a chance to whisper and thus every All boy gets a chance to score right Go!” They hadn’t gone very far before Paul said “Score” He pointed to a dandelion which everyone knew They all scored on robins peach trees dogwood trees and Bparrows They came to a farmhouse after a while which was a little way from Brown’s Wood Here they got some milk While EarJ was getting it the rest went down the lane to find a good spot to camp It was skady and near a stream "Five of you build your fire over there” said Earl pointing to a spot over in one corner "and you others build your fire in the other corner and I’ll make mine here for the cocoa” Each group had a chief who cut the wood and reported his group's success It wasn't long before all three fires were blazing merrily with a group of boys around each eating the lunch his mother had prepared for him After eating they put the fires out with water Then they sat d'own and decided to play some quiet games Guess "It" tells the first letter of some object that’s around where the group is sitting The one guessing right is "It” for the next turn Other games they played were buzs hang stone and tree tag Eht Wee Accident Gives Elenor -- 4 Page (Jane Pace) Fun at camp proved a real inspiration to our young poets W® hope that each one that portrayed the fun of camp life so vividly will have a chance to enjoy camp life for a while this summer AT REDCLIFFE to the The wind is whispering leaves The sun is sinking in the west Birds are swiftly winging homeward Homeward to the little nest As we watch the glowing sunset jQst a wisp of smoke we see When we’re nearer we hear voices Voices singing laughing free!) SHIRLEY SYHETT Cedar City Sara’s Fish Adds To Camp Dinner "Father let’s go fishing” pleaded little Sara Mr Dennis looked at his daughter and then at his wife "How about it Emily?" Would you like to camp out on the river bank and do some fishing?” "Why I’d love to” answered his wife Sara clapped her hands and exclaimed: "Oh goody!” Mr Dennis smiled at her and then turned to his newspaper The next day Mr Dennis bought equipment The following day found the Dennis family staking their ' tents on the river bank That afternoon Mr Dennis fixed Sara's pole and posted her right outside the tent “Now don’t fall in 7 he cautioned “I won’t" she answered smiling Sara fished until 4 o’clock At that time she brought in a mediumsized fish the fruit of her efforts Her mother smiled and said: “We’ll cook it for supper" She did cook Sara’s fish Also four Mr Dennis had caught The next day Sara played among the trees and went wading in a shallow part of the river She was very sorry when the time came to go But she was glad to get home again ELAINE GOULD 12 Provo Utah A Jumping Egg Did you ever see an egg jump? s side by To do so put two side on the table place an egg in the first cup (small pointed end downwards) and announce that you will make the egg pass into the other cup without touching the egg or egg-cuThis trick is quite simple Simply blow against the egg nearest to you and It will jump into the much to the surprise other egg-cu- p and amusement of your friends egg-cup- Bacon frying with the smell just right Or trout a sizzling brown earth sea and sky Paris and many the Prince of others Time for them to go home came too soon but a promise must be kept to the boys’ mothers BOBBY BREWSTER Age 1L Sait Lake City Elenor was one of the six cousins taken by Uncle Rod and Aunt May to the northwest to camp for a few weeks Elenor had always lived in the city and had not found time to learn to swim play baseball or any such sport and her cousins found her no fun at all They toured through huge forests around sparkling lakes and by mountains with white tops of snow Soon Uncle Rod turned off the mam highway and motored slowly along a small road "Well here we are" said Unde Rod as he stopped thq motor of the car All were out of the car with leaps and bounds "Say lend me a hand” called Uncle £od to Duane Ted and Dick By late evening the tent had been pitched supper eaten and a sufficient amount of worms for the fishing trip had been caught The next day arrived and all were ready to start on the fishing trip It was quite a hike to the lake and Uncle Rod estimated it would be about 1 o'clock before they would reach ft The sun was hot in the open spaces and Elenor lagged behind most of the time She longed to be at home on the porch where it was cool Her legswere scratched the perspiration poured from her face and how hungry she was How could anyone find pleasure in this? Finally they reached the dear blue lake "Shall we eat here?” inquired Aunt May All agreed that they should Uncle Rod and the others went south to fish in the lake all but Elenor She wandered up a narrow path by the side of the lake “I think I'll go wading it's not so deep" she said to herself The cool water made her feel goocf and she walked farther into the middle Soon the water came to her waist She became excited and turned back She slipped and felt the bottom of the lake Elenor wondered if she was going to come up Slowly she did rise and decided that it wasn't so bad after all Elenor was not so much afraid noiy and thought she’d try to swim as she had seen others do To her delight she found she was able to do a few strokes This pleased her She tried again and again and was happy to find she was making rapid progress ' Aunt May began to worry about her and sent Joyce and Lue to find Elenor Joyce was first to find her and was amazed to learn that Elenor knew how to swim "Come here Elenor” shouted “You'll have to hurry back Joyce to camp and get some dry clothes on I didn’t know you could swim” “I didn’t either till a while ago” replied Elenor “At last I’ve found some fun at camp" KATHRYN CRANE 13 Salt Lake Cjty Camp Redcliffe Offers Good Time One of the unusual things that popped into Goldie’s head last summer at Camp Redcliffe was having a Christmas party in July We went out to hunt for a tree and found a beauty— but Goldie could not bear to cut it down A Scotch thistle decorated with red cellophane took the place of the tree Each girl brought a gift from the woods and these were distributed at the end of the party We played games among which was modeling animals of chewing gum Light refreshments added to the fun It was a unique party and could be copied at any camp large or small KNIGHT SOPHIE REED 12 Ogden |
