Letters to the Editor Help Needed to Ensure Future of Liberty Arena The Liberty Park and arena have suffered far too much vandalism in the past few years. We have spent extensive amounts of money on replacing the arena lights, which shortly after were shot out. The announcer’s stand was burned due to vandalism, and although someone donated siding to re-side the announcer’s stand, we have been unable to find volunteers to help install it. The ground in the arena is extremely hard. This is because of poor footing material and old material that has not been replaced in 8 to10 years (as I understand). The arena sees extensive amounts of use. The Junior Posse rides on Tuesday nights, Western Valley Riders on Wednesday nights, and Roping on Thursday nights. In addition, many special events are held at other times. Western Valley Riders has tried to run fundraisers, such as Jackpots, but due to the fact that the lighting doesn’t work and the poor footing conditions, other riding clubs in Northern Utah find it hard to ride at the arena. As a member of Western Valley Riders, we try very hard to spend time grooming, watering, and caring for the arena, but without additional funds we cannot maintain the facility in order to keep it safe and rideable for all Liberty residents. Kent Boyington said that the Liberty Park Committee would like to help fund some of the arena improvements, but the only available money has been budgeted to replace the bleachers that are falling apart and dangerous, and other general maintenance projects in the park. We would like to ask that, AT LEAST, the riders and families of those using the Liberty Park arena to please donate as much as possible to secure the future of the arena; or contact me if you are willing to offer your services. We are in need of sprinkler system and electrical work, siding, hauling of sand/dirt, painting, weed control, and tilling of the arena. It is sad to see the condition of the arena deteriorate with little notice; it would be even sadder to see us loose the arena in the future due to lack of participation and funding. My efforts are minimal, but I am hoping that, at some point, people will stand up and help out towards making our community a better place! Editor’s View Spring Cleaning—Volunteers needed By Shanna Francis As the snow melts and the Valley floor begins to turn green, residents and visitors are reminded of an uglier side of human behavior—the disrespectful act of littering. This selfish act by a few creates a heavy burden for the many, requiring an ever increasing need of time and energy in order to maintain a clean and healthy environment. Please do your part by cleaning up your own yard this spring, and the road frontage in front of your property where so much litter is discarded by inconsiderate motorists. You can also do your part by setting a proper example for your own children by not littering, and reminding them of the many WOLF CREEK cont. from page 1 the initial cost of repairing the green, we have been forced to invest in significant surveillance equipment and security measures to ensure that this doesn’t happen again. This new breed of vandalism is just unfathomable to me, particularly after all the investments we have made over the last three years in order to significantly improve PATHWAYS cont. from page 1 already lining up volunteers to help lay the weed barrier and to spread the road base. One or two foot bridges may also be needed. If this is the case, Pathways may begin asking for help from Scouts who would like a project to work on, or other volunteers from the community. If you are interested in participating in Ogden Valley Pathways activities, please contact Brandon Fuller at 645-6060, or Melodie Hansen at 745-3345.
