In a conversation with Mayor Godfrey last week, he stated that work on the project would begin as early as this spring, with infrastructure operations being completed first. Kiesel and 23rd street will be extended and constructed through the project area, the remaining existing parking garage will be modified and enhanced for safety and viability, and utilities will be installed. By the end of the summer, work should be well underway on the first phase of the development—the construction of movie theaters, restaurants, the new Tree House Museum, a large bookstore and other commercial space, and above ground floor housing units. The city is also hoping to attract a high adventure recreation center that Godfrey hopes will be a regional draw. The center would include facilities for indoor skydiving, climbing, and repelling. The city is also announcing negotiations Coldwell Banker will be sponsoring a series of Real Estate Seminars for the general public. It is hoped that commercial traffic and dollars from consumers visiting Wal-Mart will spillover into the heart of downtown. The city is also revisiting the idea of a Gondola that would carry downtown Ogden visitors to the top of Snowbasin resort. Godfrey stated that he views the project as a draw in the creation of downtown Ogden as a destination community. “It would provide a unique connection to visitors to the state who could fly into the Salt Lake International Airport, take commuter rail into Ogden’s intermodal hub, then take a Gondola to the top of Snowbasin to spend the day on the slopes—all without even having to rent a car. In the evening, guests could shop and dine at a number of fine restaurants, and enjoy their stay at one of Ogden’s downtown hotels.” Ogden’s goal is to create an environment that will generate higher levels of activity with a 24-hour presence, and to provide services to support increased employment and housing in the downtown area.
