DARK HORSE (The i-ROK Band) The dictionary defines DARK HORSE as a little known contestant that makes an unexpectedly good showing. The term is also used to refer to a political candidate unexpectedly nominated, which is usually a compromise between factions. Applied to a rock band, the name translates into an unexpectedly good style of music that appeals to a very wide audience. Brad Vause had been writing songs since 1974. After performing in a rock band with Judy Quist for more than five years, they formed Dark Horse in Weber County, Utah in 1990. Eventually they became weary of performing the same material as many others among the hordes of hopefuls. They were personally dissatisfied with the lyrics of some of the most popular crowd-pleasing songs. The songs did not reflect their attitudes, their values, or their life styles. Some of the lyrics seemed to be polluted with mundane, incoherent phrases that made a very weak attempt to pass as artwork. Brad and Judy perceived themselves as artists. They were firm believers that for a song to be good, the lyrics had to stand alone as poetry before the first note of music was played. The solution, of course, was to write original material. They wanted to create a unique, commercial sound and identity. Judy believed that some of Brad’s new material could gain a following. Together they began to search for musicians to help create and perform their originals.
