Show THE OGDEN VALLEY NEWS Page 6 Volume VI, Issue VII July 15, 2002 Huntsville Gains Volleyball Court through Eagle Scout Project Colton McKay, 13, always wanted to do a “Cool” Eagle Project. When the Huntsville Town provided a list of suggestions for improving the park, he jumped at the idea of putting in the Sand Working hard at spreading sand in the new volleyball court. Volleyball Pit. He and the whole community could enjoy it for years to come. Little did he know that it would take four times longer than the required 100 hours for Eagle Scout. Dozens of friends and their dads gave up some Saturday mornings and several evenings to help bring this project to fruition. Mayor Jim McKay and Councilmen Rock Harper helped in the planning stages and more. Councilman Steve Songer worked with Colton and Chad McKay on every stage from planning to sod and sand. Neighbor Rich Wilder donated his sod-cutting machine and his time to cut the whole court. James (Jimmy) McKay donated several hours to remove dirt from the court area, fit the border and spread the sand. Chad McKay, Marl McKay, Dave Morse, Dale and TJ Maxwell, Dave, Ben and Zach Jenkins, Tatjana Siggard, Tyrel Parkinson, Andrew Stevenson, Spencer and Shaun Bowen, and all of Colton’s family worked tirelessly on sod removal, dirt removal, smoothing, bordering and spreading 120 tons of sand to complete the volleyball court. Also greatly appreciated was the Forest Service donation of border logs, Fife Rock Product’s donation of 15 tons of sand, and the Town of Huntsville’s contribution of additional sand and the net system. This project turned out to be a lot bigger than Colton ever imagined, but it was all worthwhile. This labor of love from the many volunteers resulted in an awesome court for the community. After playing on it with his friends and family, Colton said that it definitely turned out to be “Cool.” Ogden Scouts Help with Huntsville Outdoor Theater Boy scouts and other volunteers from Ogden worked a total of 52 hours to help get the Huntsville Outdoor Theater project started. The scouts attended two Huntsville City Council meetings to get project permission from Mayor Jim McKay. Dakota Hyde, stated in his Eagle Scout project, “The benefit would be that they won’t have to pay as much because my father is going to buy the stain and I am going to work it off from him. It will take less time and effort for them because my time and effort in staining the wood. My parents are going to drive the volunteers to and from the church to Huntsville.” Dakota also handed out flyers to inform people about the project and asking them join in. His father, Jeff Hyde, owner of Trappers Village, donated exterior stain and paint accessories needed to stain seventeen large rough-cut timbers. Others who helped on this project were: Jacob Porter, Dakota Hyde, Aiver Hyde, Bonnie Hyde, Josh Jones, Christian Kunz, Paul Kunz,Jan Taylor and Jeff Hyde.
