Renovation on Pineview Dam Embankment and Spillway to Begin Compiled by Pam Mitchell By the time this article is published, Pineview Reservoir will be less than half full according to Mr. Tage Flint of the Weber Basin Water Conservancy District. The water is not disappearing because of the drought, however. The intended drop in water level will allow necessary repairs to the Pineview Dam spillway. These repairs are intended to bring the dam up to current seismic standards of the Safety of Dams Act, passed in 1978 and amended in 1984. The Bureau of Reclamation will begin the first phase of scheduled renovation work on July 15, 2002 as part of the agency’s Safety of Dams Program. The work will consist of strengthening the spillway by lining the gate structure with reinforced concrete and steel plating. This will necessitate an excavation of the dam embankment adjacent to the left spillway wall and result in the temporary closing of U.S. Highway 162, which crosses the crest of the dam. The Bureau of Reclamation and its contractor, CM Concrete, Inc. of Blanding, Utah, estimate that the road will be closed from July 20, 2002 until October 19, 2002. Pineview Dam is part of the Ogden River Project, and was built in 1937. It is located 7 miles east of Ogden, Utah, and is a zoned, earthfill structure with a crest length of 600 feet and a structural height of 137 feet. The dam has total capacity of 152,000 acre-feet and provides municipal and irrigation water to communities between the mouth of Ogden Canyon and the Great Salt Lake. Water will not be wasted during this process. Weber Basin Water Conservancy District worked out a deal with the Davis and Weber Counties Canal Company to divert the district’s share of Pineview water north to the canal in exchange for water that the Canal Company owns on the Weber River. The pumps are moving water at the rate of 150 cubic feet per second, costing Weber Basin Water Conservancy District $150,000 each month. However, Weber Basin can store the extra water for next year. As beaches grow wider with the reservoir draining, fewer boats will be allowed on the water. A full reservoir permits 350 boats at one time, while only 200 will be allowed during its low level this summer. Reclamation officials and its contractor will have crews working around the clock to complete the spillway work as quickly as possible to minimize the effects of the road closure on the surrounding communities. The agency expects no interruption of water deliveries. The estimated completion date is March 20, 2003 at a cost of approximately $2.9 million dollars. Valley residents showed a low voter turnout for the Primary election on June 25. While 11 to 22 percent of registered voters visited the polls throughout the Top of Utah, only about 12 percent voted in Ogden Valley. Some voters had mixed feelings about declaring their party affiliation if they wanted to vote in the Republican primary. A very upset lady called Snowcrest Junior High because she had heard on the television, “Don’t come to vote unless you are Republican.” This is the first year voters have had to be a registered Republican to vote in the Republican primary. Democrats did not require their primary voters to register. Registration does not restrict whom voters can choose in the general election. (See information at the end of this article.) Election workers earn a small stipend for the hours they put in. They had a long day, from 6:30 a.m. until the polls closed at 8:00 p.m. Workers at the Ogden Valley Library included Gloria Froerer, Sandy Phelps and Angie Pierotti. Election workers at Snowcrest Junior High were Kathleen Peterson and David and Elaine Butt. The polls had a steady flow of voters. David Butt said, “We would start to eat our lunch and someone else would come in.” Although quite a few voters were upset about the closed ballot, he said that the process went pretty smoothly. Voters were entertained with jokes from Mr. Butt and even enjoyed some sweets. Kathleen Peterson said, “I really enjoy working the elections. You get to visit and see people as they come in to vote.” Elaine Butt said, “I enjoy seeing people and working on projects.” All have worked in election polling on and off for some time. David and Elaine Butt also spent two days registering satellite registrations at the Ogden Valley Library on June 14 and 17. There will be another opportunity to register at the Ogden Valley Library in October 25 and 28, from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., for the upcoming General Election. Residents from anywhere in Weber County may register there. The unofficial results of the Primary Election on June 25 were as follows: U.S. House District 1 Rob Bishop, Republican, will advance to the General Election (24,937 votes). Kevin Garn, Republican, captured 16,773 votes. Advancing to the General Election on the Democrat ticket is Dave Thomas with PRIMARY cont. on page 4 AYSO 422 Hosts Another Successful Soccer Tournament AYSO 422 hosted a summer season soccer tournament in Ogden Valley on June 26 through 29. Ninety-two teams came to participate, some from as far away as Elko, Nevada, and Delta, Utah. The teams played on nine fields located at Liberty, Eden, Huntsville, Snowcrest Jr. High, the Huntsville LDS Stake Center, and Valley Elementary. Thank you to the field owners who allowed the teams to play. Ogden Valley teams placed well in the tournament. The U-19 Co-ed Team, coached by Annette Piccolo, took Fourth Place. Brady Radmall coached the U-14 Boys into Fifth Place, while LeiLani Gauchat led the U-14 Girls to Second Place. The U-12 Boys Team, coached by Gail Ahlstrom, and the U-12 Girls Team, coached by Natalie Shupe, both took First Place.
