The cookbook will premiere at Planet Rainbow on Saturday, April 27, from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The popular food pins instantly identified a broad range of Utah’s food culture, encompassing and revitalizing our state’s food scene. The cookbook introduces amusing, time saving recipes that succeed at falling back on the fine tradition of pioneer home cooking. Planet Rainbow is the creator of seven fun food pins. Aminco International of California—the sole manufacturer of the 2002 Olympic souvenir pins—has already released three different editions of the famous Mormon Muffin pin, and will present the next four in mid-summer of 2002. The “Utah Pin Cookin’” cover. Hooked on Books NON FICTION A Mind At A Time by Mel Levine, M. D. This author and book have been featured lately on morning television shows and on Oprah. In it Levine shows parents and teachers how to identify learning patterns of children. He also shares with parents and teachers how to work with the learning patterns, in order to help children work through their weaknesses. This is an excellent resource for parents and teachers. Bureau and the Mole by David Vise This is the revealing story of the most notorious double agent in history. He was a good family man, active in his religion, and well respected by the Bureau Director. The describes how, for many years, the double agent was able to live a life of betrayal to his family and country. He was so devious that he was able to sell documents to the Russians without revealing his own identity. The book is written by the Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist David Vise. An amazing book. FICTION A Common Life by Jan Karon This is the latest in the Mitford Series. All the Mitford characters will show up for the wedding in this book. Don’t miss it. If you haven’t read Jan Karon’s books . . . start now, you will love all of them. Breaking Clean, by Judy Blunt When Judy was just 18 years old, her father arranged for her to marry a cowboy who was at least ten years older than she was. She became a Montana ranch wife, just as her mother and grandmother had been. This book is about the strength it took for the author to wrench her life away from the hardships of ranching and an unloving marriage, to return to college and become an author. This changed her life and the her children forever. CHILDREN’S LITERATURE Hugs and Kisses by Chrisophe Loupy This book is about a puppy who sets out to kiss all the animals. But he soon discovers that it is not easy to kiss all the animals. At the end of the day, he discovers the best kiss is really from his mother. CHAPTER BOOKS Out of the Dust by Karen Hesse, A Newberry Award Book - 4th to 7th grade This is a wonderful book for children. It is written in free-verse poems. Billie Jo expresses her feelings about losing her mother and a father that can’t talk about it. How she loves the piano but due to an accident she is unable to play. It takes place in Oklahoma during the dust storms when families are losing their farms. Through all this, Billie Jo finds joy within herself. April is Poetry month and this is an excellent way for children to learn to love poetry. Read to/with your child 2. Discuss current events 3. Stop and really listen to what your child is saying—verbally and nonverbally 4. Provide a variety of great music/books in the home 5. Help your children do good deeds for one another 6. Remember that every child is different and accept those differences 7. Quote and discuss time-tested euphemisms, i.e., “The best place to find a helping hand is at the end of your own arm.” 8. Keep personal and family journals 9. Be actively involved in your children’s lives 10.Provide responsibilities that will provide them with work, and allow them to stretch, and grow 11.Teach manners, especially through your own example 12.Habitually participate in activities and outings together 13.Help children to understand their own value and goodness, and that of others 14.Play games together 15.Avoid/eliminate non-productive behavior, i.e. nagging, complaining, fault-finding 16.Think of community or neighbor hood service projects you can do together 17.Find reasons to celebrate—birthdays, a beautiful spring day, successes, achievements, and holidays 18.Ask your child about the worst and the best thing that happened to them during the day 19.Compliment one another 20.Sing songs, lots of songs—in the morning, while you work, drive, and play together. What about an old-fashioned lullaby once in awhile at bedtime? (Whistling is great too!) 21.Be slow to give advice, and quick just to listen 22.Pray together 23.Attend religious services together 24.Develop and continue family traditions 25.Express love to each other openly 26.Give children a sense of family by visiting relatives, visiting family grave sites and sharing stories about their ancestors 27.Don’t demean family, or extended family members 28.Set limits 29.Validate your child’s feelings by not, discounting, ignoring, or belittling those that are demonstrated or expressed 30.Act as an emotion coach by exploring with your child, strategies to address perceived or valid problems they are facing—teach them to act, not react 31.Recognize emotional times as an opportunity for intimacy and teach ing 32.Teach children the value of integrity and civility through education and by example 33.Remember that unstructured time together is just as, or even more, important than structured time together |
