Its immediate success catapulted the creation of more than 100 food pins in the next few years, and instantly recognized a broad range, all encompassing Utah food culture that is both quirky and quacky, fun and lively. This trend revitalizes our state’s food scene by identifying amusing timesaving recipes that fall back on the fine tradition of pioneer home cooking. After WWII our Utah housewives, now no longer tied down to “the house and the coal stove,” became more and more a contributing factor to the business and professional setting of Utah’s economy. The Food Pins have recognized this emancipation of the Beehive female population by marking a new food tradition that is the product of the last half of the 20th century. The Deseret State is known for its sunny, spiritual, and slightly conservative approach to living, a philosophy that shines on the totality of Utah’s Utah’s Food Pin creators and collectors can surely vouch for that: what makes good food regionally also makes good food for fun! Utah’s pioneer heritage has leant nostalgic, healthy, well-keeping foods to our list of dietary staples. Practical fruit-of-the-earth favorites such as Widow’s Milk, Bee In Your Bonnet Honey Butter and The Mormon Muffin make for good eatin’ and endearing tales of yesteryear Utah. With a positively bursting population, Utahns get creative in making their grocery dollar stretch. Such thriftiness has inspired some of the tastiest, though peculiar, appetizers, entrees, side dishes and self-catered party selections of all times. Carrots in Suspended Animation Jell-o®, Funeral Potatoes and The Great Strawberry Lake Kool-Aid® Punch are only some of the recipes that make curious national headlines for our State. Outsiders may see us as a bit rigid, with an unusually defined, inclusive behavioral code designed for those who gravitate toward the Utah majority. Let’s set the record straight and summarize it for you: Good things in moderation for the greater good of good people (this is a semi-official disclaimer for Utah liquor, caffeine, and marriage laws!). Which brings us to such racy recipes as One at a Time Beer Bread, Triple Cherry Jackpot Coca Cola® and Produce Polygamy Fruit Salad, which are also included in this light-hearted, though reverent look, at the face of Utah’s signature food scene. May the Utah Pin collector and the avid pun collector laugh and truly enjoy this first edition of Pin Cookin’, where we’re servin’ up one great big helping of the not so sacred recipes of our Beehive State!
