Show Volume III, Issue II THE OGDEN VALLEY NEWS Page 5 November 15, 2000 Local Craft Fair Continues to Grow By Barbie Sunderland Ogden Valley News Staff What began as a small unknown craft fair ten years ago, has grown into a well-respected three-day event featuring crafters from near and far. Carver’s Cove Craft Fair, held annually the third weekend in October, had its biggest showing yet this year. “Impressive,” said hostess Audrey Carver about this year’s fair. About 2,000 people visited the fair looking at and buying every type of craft imaginable. Much of the success of the fair has been attributed to its unique atmosphere. From the moment people step out of their cars they experience a warm and homey environment. Having the fair in a home makes it unlike any other, say crafters. “The personalized touch makes it a cut above the rest,” said April Hawks. The Liberty resident has run the cash register since the first year which gives her a chance to meet most of the guests. “People come from all over, even out of state,” said Hawks. Some even go as far as planning their vacations to the area at fair time. The fair had its beginnings when Carver’s sister Jami Willson approached her about hosting one in her home. Because of the success, the fair has become a family affair requiring Audrey and her husband Rod, and whatever children are available, to empty much of the house to make room for the crafters’ wares. Pumpkin displays and hand-crafted welcome signs greet visitors as they walk from their cars to the front door. Guests are then invited into the home to see the potpourri of work the crafters have created. Visitors soon find that each room has a theme—woodworking, Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Although she enjoys hosting and coordinating the fair, her next favorite part is when it’s done and it’s quiet again. Many crafters only show at this event, says Carver. Some people stop by just because this is the only opportunity they have to buy a particular person’s work. Floral designer Ann Dickson of Liberty said as a first year participant it was a lot of fun and a good opportunity to meet other crafters in the area. “Keeping it the same weekend every year helps with the advertising,” said Lora Hart of Liberty. The woodworker has been crafting rustic wood creations for the fair for six years. Next year’s fair is planned for the third weekend in October at Carver’s Cove in Eden.
