Show THE OGDEN VALLEY NEWS Page 24 Volume III, Issue I November 1, 2000 Student News Three New Teachers at Snowcrest Junior High In this year of teacher shortages throughout the state, we at Snowcrest Jr. High are happy to announce that all of our teaching positions are filled as we welcome three new teachers to the school. James Christensen Jenny Songer This is James’ first year as a Resource teacher. He’s worked in schools for three years and in the Juvenile Justice System for one year. He says that he loves working with youth of all ages, and is really excited to be at Snowcrest. “I was in the middle of planning to join the Peace Corps when I heard that there was a position available at Snowcrest. This new information posed a dilemma. Should I return to Africa to face the 120-degree weather, the spiders as big as my head, and the incessant flies? Or, should I move home (where we have plumbing, air conditioning, and less daunting spiders) and teach at the best school in the nation? The decision was simple. I would return to my birthplace and teach at the same junior high I had attended. And, for being the first alumna to return to Snowcrest, Mr. Stillwell has promised me a plaque. Lewis Johnson Lewis is a veteran teacher who is returning to Snowcrest after several years of teaching at the Jr. High and High School levels in the Ogden area. He is teaching math and science at Snowcrest. Eighth Grade Health Students Making a Difference By Cindy Baker On Tuesday, October 17 you may have seen lots of kids in orange vests along the roadside somewhere between the Maverick convenience store in Eden, and the Yacht Club. Even though it’s deer hunting season, these kids in orange vests weren’t hunting for deer, they were hunting for garbage. If you saw the orange bags that dotted the roadside, you know they found plenty of it. These great kids were from Mr. Baker’s 8th grade Health Classes at Snowcrest Jr. High. They have been doing various activities and discussing mental, social and emotional health. One of the basic emotional needs of every human being is the need to feel worthwhile. One of the best ways to feel worthwhile is to serve others, whether it be serving family, friends or community. So now, these 8th graders from Snowcrest have another reason to feel worthwhile, because they have “made a difference” for all of us. When you see kids in orange vests “making a difference” in our community don’t honk and yell at them to get off the road; honk and wave, and help them feel worthwhile. Another group from Snowcrest, The National Junior Honor Society, has adopted River Road. You too can make a difference by “Adopting A Highway.” Contact the State or County Highway Department for more information. Cleaning up along the new Ogden Valley Pathway. “I am excited for this experience and have loved working with such talented students and brilliant faculty. I am excited to meet all of you as well. I hope you will all take the opportunity to attend the parent-teacher conference.” Ogden Valley Sports and Recreation Ogden Valley Sports and Recreation is an organization that has been in the Valley for many years. It was formed to provide sports and recreation activities to the children of Ogden Valley. Some of these activities include baseball, softball, basketball, football and the Kidz Daze park program. Sports and Recreation programs teach children about teamwork, sportsmanship, improving and developing skills, and about having positive learn- ing experiences, at the same time the children have some fun. Proceeds from fundraisers, such as compiling and selling the Valley phonebook, go to maintenance and improvements to the park, materials for sports and recreation registration, uniforms, and for umpire costs. Help support your local Valley Sports and Recreation program. Getting ready to clean up. For more information, contact Melodie Hansen at 745-1773.
