We are all familiar with the term “HMO” – Health Maintenance Organization, our family’s Health Insurance Plan, and none of us want to be without this important coverage today. It has become a necessity for our family. However, it wasn’t always that way. This is interesting: When health insurance was first introduced, most people said “not for me, I’d rather pay the doctor and hospital bills myself and not pay an insurance company to do it for me.” It took ten years for the HMO Industry to reach just 2% of the available buyers for their new product. Then something happened, people began to accept the new concept and it took just seven more years to reach 52%. When people saw that it worked, it took off. HMO’s and Health Insurance are currently a One TrillionDollar industry. So, what does that have to do with Legal Protection? Good question! Let’s take a look. A Legal Protection Plan is similar to the HMO; it’s a “LMO”-Legal Maintenance Organization. The LMO does for Attorney and Legal bills what HMO does for Doctor and Hospital bills. Team Titles Include: -Triple Crown at Western Nationals -Overall at Utah Open, Rocky Mt. & Mt. Nebo Most people claim that they don’t need a Legal Plan because they don’t use lawyers. The most common response to a legal dispute: Ignore the problem, or try to handle it yourself. That could be dangerous and costly. You know what they say: any man whom acts as his own lawyer has a fool for a client. Consider the following: “Even law abiding Americans will encounter a potential legal situation an average of four to six times per year!” National Resource Center for Consumers of Legal Services; “More than half of all households have a legal situation right now” American Bar Association; and comparing hospital admissions for 1997 (33 Million) with Court Filings for 1997 (100 Million), you are three times more likely to be in court than in the hospital. Here’s an illustration, which might give some answers to the question, “Who needs a Legal Plan?” It’s called: “If You Were My Attorney….” “If You Were My Attorney” I would like you to consider yourself an attorney for a minute. How much do attorneys charge per hour? $150 to several hundred dollars? Just for example, consider yourself a $100per hour attorney. I come to you and tell you I’m married and have two children, including a teenage driver. What I would like to do is work out a flat monthly fee with you to provide legal services for me, my spouse, and our children. I’m going to outline some needs I have. As I go through these needs, I want you to add them up at $100 per hour. Then I want you to tell me how much you would have to charge each month, on an on-going basis, for these services. · I want to be able to pick up the phone and talk with you about any legal matters, personal or business. Things which concern me, but I just don’t understand all the legal ramifications. Of course I will call only during your regular business hours. · When we need anything of a personal legal nature such as a letter written, a phone call made, a contract reviewed or language changed, we want you to do that for us too. · I would also like you to draft my Will. Then each year, I would like you to review and update it for me as needed. · I want to have this access throughout the United States. If I’m traveling in another state and need legal assistance, I expect you to refer me to an attorney in that state. Example: If any of us get a moving traffic citation either at home or while traveling, I want an attorney to represent us in court and get the best e r a s e s s a Cl ited Lim they can for us so our auto insurance rates don’t go up. I want the other attorney to bill you, and I want you to pay that bill out of this monthly fee arrangement we set up. · I want you to provide trial defense services for us if we face civil suits or job-related criminal charges, even if our insurance company appoints an attorney for us; and represent us if we are charged criminally (manslaughter, auto homicide, etc) as a result of a tragic accident for which our auto insurance carrier provides no coverage. · If I get audited by the IRS, I want you to walk me through it, go with me to any IRS hearings, and represent me in court if it goes that far. Now, if you were my attorney, what flat monthly fee would you charge me for all these services? Add it up at $100 per hour. What is that kind of legal service worth? All of these Legal Services, and more, are provided in a Family Legal Plan for $25 per month or less. There are some limitations and restrictions. Special plans are available for Law Enforcement Officers, Business Owners, Truck Drivers with CDL licensing; and group rates are available for employee benefit programs.
