Show Volume I , Issue IX The Ogden Valley News Page 13 June 1999 SPRING CLEANING IN THE CANYON By Lorine Murtagh A clean canyon gives that same euphoric feeling that a clean house does. Saturday, May 22, was the day Ogden Canyon got its spring cleaning. Almost 100 volunteers from all over the Ogden vicinity came out to either pull Dyers Woad or fill and tote bright orange trash bags full of everything from A to Z . . . axle parts, broken bottles, decades old cable wiring, tons of fast food litter, etc., etc., etc. Several groups of teenagers (Clearfield Job Corps, DeMolay, Jobs Daughters, and Youth Corrections), university students, and residents from Ogden City and Ogden Valley donned vests and gloves and were hard at it by 9:00 a.m. Rainbow Gardens provided a “hot cinnamon roll and beverage” continental breakfast to get the energy levels up. It’s funny how a labor intensive project such as this can bring out that “having a good time” atmosphere even though sweat hangs heavy from the brow. Everyone involved pulled and toted their share of the load. After the clean-up, a good old fashioned outdoor cook-out was held at The Oaks, and the attendees, including Smokey Bear and Hooty Owl from the USDA Forest Department, enjoyed grilled hamburgers cooked to perfection by Keith Rounkles (owner of The Oaks), along with a “to die for” spread of condiments, to include the famous Gray Cliff Lodge brownies. Not only was food provided to all who participated in the clean-up, but a drawing was held and several great prizes, donated by the Alskan Inn, Gray Cliff Lodge, The Oaks, USDA Forest Department, and Ogden Canyon Club, were given to the happy winners. This was one of those events that could go down in the record books as “A BIG SUCCESS.” THANK YOU to the members of the Ogden Canyon Club, our sponsors, and the folks who “showed they care about keeping Ogden Canyon a place of beauty.” YOU WON’T WANT TO MISS OUR FALL CLEAN-UP!!!
