Shakespearean Festival A Success Valley Elementary students prepare to head home on the last day of school for the season. by Jane McVaugh Co-director of the Shakespearean Festival Valley School’s Shakespearean Festival was another success this year. The annual festival brings together a cooperative venture between the school, parents, and the business community. As a service oriented project, the production strives to help students in grades four through six excel in the performing arts. This was the seventh Shakespearean Festival held in at the elementary school. This year’s festival, held May 6 and 7, included “A Day in the Life of an Elizabethan Child” in which the entire school was involved. A green show, two evenings of feasting, and two performances of the play, “The Comedy of Errors” were presented by the students. The festival involved more than one hundred students and one hundred parent volunteers who made costumes, prepared food, and decorated for the festivities. All practice time for the production was held before or after school. Read For The Gold This Summer It seems that there are so many reading programs to participate in! Can anyone ever emphasize reading too much? No! So . . . Read for the Gold this summer. Couple criteria with some of the great programs found at the Ogden Valley Library. You’ll find first year criteria papers available at both Valley Elementary and Snowcrest Jr. High, and at the Ogden Valley Library. When the requirements have been met and signed off, turn the paperwork in. All three locations can issue first year pins. Ask for Joan McKinney at the Ogden Valley Library. You’ll be able to advance to second year criteria at Back to School Night next fall. Weber High School students stand and sing the school song together one last time at the close of their graduation ceremony held at the Dee Event Center on June 2nd. Nature Center Update The Nature Center is shaping up at Valley Elementary, thanks to the efforts of some generous volunteers. Scout Troops, Eagle Scouts, church groups, and others who would like to get involved may do so by calling the school and asking for a member of the nature center committee. Office staff should be available during summer hours. Don’t miss this! Eden Park’s 4thof July Parade and Breakfast: Monday, July 5th 1999 at the new bowery! At a recent meeting with Weber County School District’s Assistant Superintendent Larry Yates, I was told that the sixth graders will stay at Valley Elementary School. The school district had planned to move the sixth grade classes to Snowcrest Jr. High next year in an attempt to alleviate overcrowding at the elementary school. After growth projections were presented to the school district by the growth committee for Valley, the school district had an independent study done, which also predicted significant future growth, effecting both Snowcrest and Valley. The school district will bring in portable classrooms to relieve crowding, and plans are being made to build an additional elementary school in Ogden Valley in the near future. Preparation work is already in progress to place two portable classrooms on the west side of the elementary school. The rooms will be ready for use this fall. One portable may be used as a music room while the other will be used as a temporary classroom while remodeling is being done inside the school. Additional portables will be brought in as needed. The school district plans to begin remodeling of the school this summer. Plans include new lighting, doors, paint and carpet, as well as upgrades to the restrooms. New stalls, stools, sinks, mirrors, and soap dispensers will be installed. The school will also get a new roof, scheduled for April 2000. The leaks, that have been such a problem in the past, have been repaired and should prevent further water damage until the roof is replaced. All this, together with the PTA’s plans for a new playground, will make Valley Elementary a much nicer school for our children. |
