Show Page 10 The Ogden Valley News Volume I, Issue IX June 1999 Local Student Finalist for Utah Governor’s Award B.J. Wright, a senior at Weber High School, was recently honored as a 1999 Utah Governor’s Young Entrepreneur Awards Program Finalist. This program recognizes students, still in high school, who demonstrate outstanding leadership and performance during the successful launch of a new enterprise. B.J. Wright with Gov. Leavitt B.J. owns and operates Wright Angle Ventures, a vending business. His quarter vending machines provide affordable snacks for students at several schools in the Weber School District. The contest is sponsored by the Office of the Governor and the Utah State Office of Education. Recipients of the award serve as role models for younger students, and often speak at school and business functions. Student Wins National Award Discover Financial Services and the American Association of School Administrators (AASA) recently announced the Discover Card Tribute Award Scholarships winners in the state of Utah. Stacey Ropelato of Huntsville was honored with a bronze level award, a scholarship worth $1,250. The winners, chosen from a national field of more than 10,000, are recognized for excellence in many areas of their lives, rather than being awarded solely on academic achievement. Students must maintain a minimum of 2.75 cumulative grade point average and demonstrate accomplishment in four of five areas including Special Talents, Leadership, Obstacles Overcome, Unique Endeavors, and Community Services. Winners may use the scholarship money for any type of post high school education or training, not just a four year college or university program. Stacey Ropelato “We are proud to award scholarships to students who have achieved so much in such a short amount of time,” said Cathy Davis, Vice President, Discover Financial Services. “Our goal is to assist students who excel beyond academics to continue to achieve in the future.” Stacey Ropelato is a student at Weber High School. Drawing Your Dreams Poster Contest Winners Sam Wright Rachel Wright Rachel Wright and her brother, Sam Wright recently entered the Drawing Your Dreams Poster Contest sponsored by the Utah Educational Savings Plan Trust, Utah’s college savings program. The theme of the contest was “What I want to be when I grow up”. Rachel won the Eigth Grade 1st Place award and Sam won a Second Grade Honorable Mention award. Rachel’s watercolor illistrated a wildlife photographer. Sam’s poster depicted a Police officer. Both received award money for their college savings account. Kids having fun on an Old Firehouse Child Care outing Artist Christopher Lee Adams’ Work to be on Display Native Utah resident Christopher Lee Adams’ work will be on display at the Ogden Valley Branch Library in Huntsville June 16 through August 13. An Open House will be sponsored on June 17 at 7:00 p.m. with the featured artist in attendance to visit with the public. Light refreshments will be served. Chris was born September 21, 1974. He has just received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in painting and print making from Weber State University, graduating Magna Cum Laude. He will continue his education this fall working toward certification as a teacher. Chris received an award of Merit in the 1999 Bountiful/Davis statewide Competition. He has shown in the All State Intercollegiate Show during the years of 1996 and 1998. He received two honorable Mention Awards in the 1996 show at B.Y.U. He has shown for the past four years at the Weber State Student Competition. In 1997, he received an Award of Excellence as well as a Purchase Award. Eight commissioned works are on permanent display in the Weber State University Bridge Gallery. About his work, Chris says, “It is that which has been altered by man, then returning to its roots, with intrigues me.” |
