Mountain Arts and Music will host a four-week ukulele workshop on Saturdays, beginning November 2. Classes will be taught by Jeannie Young, an accomplished musician and teacher who started the Ogden Ukulele Orchestra—a 20-member group that gets together regularly, and plays at events such as the summer Open Arts and Music Open Mic in Huntsville. In the ukulele workshop, those attending will learn two to three chords each session, and learn to play at least three songs using these chords. From there, you can work on your favorite songs to build your repertoire. During the workshop, those who sign up can borrow a ukulele for use during the class to see if you like it. The workshop is geared for those ages 12 years and up, and no musical experience is required to participate. Learning to play the ukulele is a great way to get ready to entertain family and friends over the holidays! Workshops will be held from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. on Saturdays, beginning November 2, at the Community Art Cabin in the Eden Center (2612 N. Highway 162—the cabin in the back of Simply Eden). Cost is $75 for the four sessions. Please RSVP for a space in the workshop at <www.mountainartsandmusic. org> Payments collected at the first workshop. The Union Station Foundation and WSU Alumni Jazz present Jazz at the Station with WSU Jazz Combos Jazz at the Station will present two WSU Jazz Combos in a free, all-ages concert in the Grand Lobby of Ogden’s Union Station, Wednesday, November 13 at 7:00 p.m. Combo personnel includes Patricio Bernal – Tenor; Teagan Davis – Trumpet; Grant Hughston – Tenor; Benjamin Olmstead – Piano; Daniel Tracy – Bass; DeSean Bryant – Drums; Jacob Smith – Tenor; Brad Baker – Bari; Austen Fowles – Piano; Max Cox – Bass; and Romney Cox – Drums. Performances by two jazz combos will bring a spotlight to the increased interest in jazz by students at Weber State University. The combos are student-led but coached by faculty member Dan Jonas. Students have the opportunity to learn concepts of improvisation and group performance and demonstrate their skills through the jazz repertoire. In addition to Jazz at the Station and WSU-sponsored concerts, the combos also play several other non-WSU events during the year, and students gain experience related to the booking and performance of these extra events. Jazz at the Station co-producer Caril Jennings states, “We are so proud to present the jazz musicians of Weber State every time they perform for Jazz at the Station. This program started more than twenty years ago to encourage student jazz musicians and jazz audiences. It has grown quite a bit since then but we are always happiest when we see jazz traditions carried on by younger musicians.” Jazz at the Station is sponsored by the Union Station Foundation, WSU Alumni Jazz, and grants from R.A.M.P., and Ogden City Arts. They are also sustained by donations from the audience jazz family. Children are welcome as long as they do not disturb the performers or other audience members. Come early to make sure you have a seat. Jazz at the Station usually performs for standing-room-only audiences. For more information regarding the combos or the jazz program at WSU, contact Dan Jonas at danieljonas@weber.edu or 801-626-6443.
