Show Volume XXV Issue VI The Ogden Valley news Page 3 May 15, 2018 Volunteers Needed to Help Clean up Ogden Ranger District Seeks Ogden Canyon during Ogden Marathon Volunteers: Join The Ogden Ranger the next designated location (the next garbage By Rick Kearl Volunteers will be cleaning up Ogden can downstream). This is an effort to clean up District for National Trails Day Canyon during the Marathon again this year, the litter that has accumulated in the environment since the last cleanup effort. Volunteers and we could use your help! The Marathon will be run Saturday, May 19. This is a rare opportunity to enjoy Ogden Canyon for several hours traffic-free! If this sounds fun to you and you decide you want to help, please email me at <rick@ospreyutah.com> You will be asked to register ASAP with the Marathon on their website so a shirt can be ordered for you. Twenty-eight volunteers (14 two-man teams) are needed. We will meet at the Gray Cliff to receive our supplies at a time designated by Marathon organizers (usually about 6:45 a.m.) and to be given printed instructions, a schedule for the day, and cell phone numbers of the other volunteers in case someone needs a ride or help. We will also have the number to call and contact the roaming medical personnel in case of any medical emergencies. Each volunteer will be supplied: • Printed instructions • Cell phone directories • Home Depot buckets for trash collection • Official free volunteer shirt (these are nice shirts! You’ll also be invited to the party for all Marathon volunteers; last year it was at a rock climbing gym!) Each team will be dispatched to their designated garbage can locations (14 each, one every third mile) in the canyon; teams will carpool to locations with the drivers going to locations where a vehicle can be parked out of the way, or dropping off teams to locations where there is not adequate parking. Extra vehicles can remain parked at the Gray Cliff parking lot. Each team will be asked to use the first hour after arrival to thoroughly clean up the canyon road and the river and its banks from their designated location downstream one-third mile to will be asked to carry everything possible to any garbage can location and to place the debris in the can. If the debris will not fit in a can, then to place it near the can but away from the runners (behind the can), this is also where any full liners will be placed. After their designated one-third mile has been cleaned, volunteers are free to roam the canyon as they wish, keeping it cleaned up, dumping their trash at the garbage cans, and replacing full liners with fresh liners as needed. Also to gather up discarded articles of clothing and to place the clothing in piles near the full liners for the charities to collect after Volunteers from the race. Dyer’s woad could prior Ogden also be cleared. At the time designated by Marathon. Marathon organizers (usually about 12:15 p.m.), volunteers will start getting rides back to the Gray Cliff with the designated drivers (another reason for everyone to bring their cell phones and have the list of numbers with them), or to simply time their walkabout to end up at the Gray Cliff or their vehicle at the appropriate time. Anyone driving a vehicle in the canyon during the race must wait to join up with a police-escorted caravan traveling in the desired direction. Our volunteers will not be involved with loading the garbage trucks or the clothing trucks as they sweep down the canyon at the end of the race; that work will be performed by volunteers already assigned to these tasks. Thanks! Ogden & Logan Ranger Districts Looking for Volunteers to Adopt-A-Trail The Ogden and Logan Ranger Districts, Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest are looking for volunteers to join the Adopt-aTrail program. The Adopt-a-Trail program offers fun, exercise, and a chance to meet new people. Volunteer opportunities are flexible. Volunteers can work at their own pace and on their own schedule. It provides an opportunity to work together as an individual or community group, and is a great family-friendly event. The program is designed to create a spirit of cooperation between different user groups, visitors, businesses, and the Forest Service. It allows for the continued enjoyment of the trails in our National Forests, year after year, for generations. It also promotes all aspects of safety in the use of equipment and vehicles, and unites those concerned in responsible land management practices through the maintenance of trails and public education. In addition, it promotes land stewardship and physical fitness, and instills a sense of pride and ownership for volunteers. And, most importantly, whether you are picking up trash, removing downed trees, or building water bars, the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forests needs you. Get involved, be a trail adopter. You can make a difference! Through the Adopt-A-Trail Program, the public, in partnership with the National Forest Systems, preserves the access to our forest and assumes responsibility of the basic maintenance of a selected trail or trail section. In this way, those of us who use the trails can share in the stewardship, ensure that they remain safe, minimally obstructive within the environment, and satisfy recreationalists. The Ogden and Logan Ranger Districts on the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest have approximately 700 non-motorized and motorized trail miles. The trails are located throughout the districts and vary in terrain, elevation, and difficulty level. Communities, private landowners, corporations, non-profit organizations and citizens are critical components. Your willingness to donate your time and services to participate in the Adopt-A-Trail program is greatly appreciated. Please contact Lisa Thompson at lisathompson@fs.fed.us or 801-625-5850 if you are interested in adopting a favorite trail. UDOT Region One Road Construction Report Memorial Day Cemetery Schedule The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) advises motorists of the following road construction and maintenance activities that may cause traffic impacts in Weber County. Snowbasin - Crews are working on a project to repave the Trappers Loop Highway (SR167). They will be working on removal activities for approximately the next month, removing shoulder pavement, beginning in Mountain Green and heading north. Guardrail removal is also taking place from the Huntsville side, heading southbound. One lane of traffic in each direction remains open to traffic. While it may appear that no work is occurring in long stretches of Trapper’s Loop, the contractor and UDOT have determined that it’s in the best interest of the safety of the traveling public to maintain the one lane closure in each direction along the entire 11 miles of Trapper’s Loop, given the limited sight distance and curves along the highway. For more information contact the project hotline at 801-904-4075, or <email udotregion1@utah.gov> Ogden - Crews are resurfacing a 3-mile segment of 31st St. (SR-79), from SR-126 to SR-204 (1900 W. to Wall Ave.) in Ogden. Chip seal work has been scheduled for the weekend of Saturday, May 19 from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. 31st St./Hinckley Drive will be reduced to one lane each direction from Airport Road to1900 W., and on Sunday, May 20, from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. from Wall Avenue to the I-15 interchange. For more information about the project, contact the project team at 877495-4240, or email <udotregion1@utah.gov> - SPECIAL EVENTS ALERTS Huntsville - May 19 Travel Alert - Next weekend is the Ogden Marathon, a one day running event (Full, Half, Relay and 5k) starting around the Causey Reservoir turn-off, traversing the Ogden Valley and ending in downtown Ogden. During a portion of the race, the Ogden Canyon Highway will be closed to vehicular travel. For more information, contact the GOAL Foundation 801-399-1773, or email <abby@goalfoundation.com> - ALPINE HIGHWAY PASS OPENINGS Huntsville - SR-39, the Monte Cristo Highway, between milepost 37 and milepost 56, remains closed to all traffic following the winter. Crews are presently working to clear the roadway, which has been closed since last November, of all winter snow. That opening is presently planned for Friday, May 25.
