Fire Restrictions Now in Place for All of Unincorporated Weber County, including Ogden Valley Utah State Division of Forestry and State Lands, in cooperation with Weber Fire District, enacted fire restrictions beginning July 15, 2016, which affect all of unincorporated Weber County east of Highway 89, Harrison Boulevard, and Mountain Road. This latest restriction also comprises the upper Ogden Valley, including Huntsville Town. These restrictions will remain in effect until conditions improve. The current weather conditions and the conditions of vegetation in the affected areas have created risk of wildland fire. Due to these conditions, a ban of the use of all fireworks and open fires in the restricted areas has been implemented (unless specifically approved). Campfires are allowed in approved fire pits built within the facilities provided for them in improved campgrounds, picnic areas or permanently improved places of habitation. The Utah State Forester has issued further restrictions regarding ammunition and cutting and welding operations. Please see the Fire Restriction Order effective July 15, 2016. Although this notice allows for campfires, it does not mean that we can let our guard down. Conditions vary greatly throughout RESTRICTIONS cont. on page 2 The Milky Way over Huntsville barn painted by Jake Songer. Photo by Norman Hall. Ogden Valley’s CERT Evolves, Becomes Ogden Valley Emergency Response Team (OVERT) It was pointed out to us that in the event of a By OVERT members Vickie McKenney, Larry McBride, Gary Fullmer, Richard Menzies On April 22, 2016 the Ogden Valley Leadership Team of CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) received an email from the Weber County Emergency Manager, Lance Peterson, saying that he was going to take CERT in a different direction and was dissolving the Ogden Valley Leadership team. After several discussions and a meeting with Sheriff Thompson, we have not yet been informed of that direction; however, we have received the “o.k.” from Sheriff Thompson to continue to provide and stock the community sheds in Ogden Valley, which we plan to do, using the OVERT funds, now in a 501(c)3, that were raised in the Valley and are not part of government CERT funds. In August 2014, the local CERT team took over as contact points for the Weber County CERT in the Ogden Valley (CERT is part of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, which is administered within the Weber County Sheriff’s office.). The situation at the time was that there was one formal CERT shed located behind Snowcrest Junior High that was stocked using government funds for use by professional first responders, one Community container in Eden Park stocked using local funds and donations, and one container with limited supplies in Huntsville. citizen reported that a FedEx van was speeding through their neighborhood. A short time later, the sheriff’s office received a report of a traffic accident involving a FedEx van that had gone into a ditch. Sure enough, the two calls were related. According to officers, the FedEx driver showed several signs of impairment and was given field sobriety tests. “Ultimately he was arrested, and blew a .25 on a breathalyzer (over three times the legal limit). Vodka was also found in a PowerAde bottle inside the vehicle.” The male FedEx driver was booked into jail on charges of DUI and having an open container that held an alcoholic beverage. A tow truck responded to the scene of the accident, and towed the van away. Eden Man Honored as EMS of the Year On July 13, Craig Orum of Eden was honored with the EMT of the Year (2016) award from the Bureau of EMS (Emergency Medical Services) at an awards luncheon held at the Viridian Event Center in West Jordan. Orum is a firefighter for Salt Lake City; however, for the last 20 years, during the winter, Craig has also worked part time for Powder Mountain with Ski Patrol and Snow Safety. Craig was nominated for the award by Life Flight Paramedic Cathy Cooper for rescuing Brian Pollick from an avalanche at Powder Mountain in January of this year. Regarding the award, Orum stated, “I was surprised when the letter came in the mail (regarding the award). The incident was one of the most mentally demanding scenes I have ever been on in the 22-plus years I have been in the fire service. Being nominated by Flight Medic Cathy Cooper means a lot because she is one of the best.” Craig Orum and his wife Courtney, have two children, Jack and Lindsey. major catastrophe, such as an earthquake, most of the professional responders would be concentrating their efforts on helping people in the wider region’s major population areas around Ogden and Salt Lake City; thus, Ogden Valley could be cut off for a significant period of time. Comments from other Utah CERT districts indicated that we were not well prepared in Ogden Valley. Consequently, in September 2014, a meeting was held with members of the community, church leaders, and local EMS/firefighters. A number of good suggestions were made, including the plea for better coordination between the LDS Church’s emergency response organization and CERT. We took these suggestions to the Emergency Manager in January of 2015 and laid out a mission statement and tentative implementation plans, which were agreed to. At the same time, $2,300 raised by prior Ogden Valley CERT contacts, was required to be deposited into the Weber County Sheriff’s Foundation account. Meetings were held with the LDS Stake President in Ogden Valley and the LDS emergency response team leader, together with the Weber County Emergency Manager and an approach was agreed upon.
