In almost all cases, the Red Cross provided food, clothing, and shelter (hotel lodging). In some cases, healthcare needs are met, such as replacing prescription medications or eye glasses. Pets are also a consideration in many cases. Besides the initial help that is provided immediately following a fire, the Red Cross then follows up with a recovery plan, working with the clients for at least another 30 days; thus, often incurring additional expenses. On top of the disaster responses noted above, the Red Cross provided canteening services to firefighters in Riverdale who were called to battle a brushfire. This all comes with a price tag, and with wildfire season upon us, the Red Cross is preparing by reminding the public that the Red Cross is funded 100% by private donations. A special program for this appeal has been set up on line with the peer to peer fundraising site Crowdrise. People can either make a donation or even host their own fundraiser by visiting <www.crowdrise.com/ FireHurtsRedCrossHelps> The campaign, in partnership with Salt Lake Fire, is called Fire Hurts, Red Cross Helps, and runs through the month of July. The goal is to raise $100,000, with 91% of that, on average, going directly to services. About the American Red Cross The American Red Cross shelters, feeds, and provides emotional support to victims of disasters; supplies about 40 percent of the nation’s blood; teaches skills that save lives; provides international humanitarian aid; and supports military members and their families. While hunting and trapping are both legal, the exceptionally dangerous situations the increasing numbers of those activities create when conducted in close proximity to homes is not. We simply must implement a limited permitting process associated with hunters and trappers in our valley. Priority for such permits should be awarded to local Huntsville residents and not near homes or major walking trails. These types of sensible locations will preserve the wildlife, afford more actual opportunity to hunters and trappers, and reduce the inherent danger to local residents. Nobody needs to hunt and trap anymore to make a living or feed their families. Nobody wants to endanger the residents of Huntsville or their beloved pets. I thank you for your time and attention, and hope appropriate agencies will weigh my request with an open mind and equal concern for Valley residents and what are appropriate activities in 2014 (not a hundred years ago) on federal lands in the Valley. The well-organized generally prevail in lobbying for public policy—irrespective of their number. The residents of Ogden Valley devoted to the safe, peaceful and tranquil atmosphere comprise the majority here. If you will join me in organizing our voices in unison for safe, limited hunting and trapping in our Valley, the public good will not only be served, it will prevail for our common benefit. If you choose not to, or simply don’t take the time to, dangerous conditions will continue with likely mortal consequences. Thank you again and best wishes, Becky Wood, Huntsville |
