Huntsville Utah Marathon—Volunteers needed! By Candy Facer “The Huntsville Utah Marathon was the best!” “The Water Stops were incredible!” “The cheering crowds in Huntsville were so encouraging!” “The volunteers in the park and along the course were so kind!” My response to these, and many more positive comments from last year’s marathon was, “We owe it all to the volunteers!” This was the first Huntsville Utah Marathon and we had over 350 great volunteers, ranging in age from eight-years-old to eighty, and most of them came from our very own Ogden Valley. Thank you for everything you did. Now, once again, The Huntsville Utah Marathon is quickly approaching. It will be held Saturday, September 28, 2013, and we’re asking for your help. Come and join us for a truly incredible experience. This year’s event will be even bigger and better. Join us for a day of working together, and in sharing the joy of helping people see their dreams come true when they cross the finish line in Huntsville, Utah. For more information, visit huntsvilleutahmarathon.com and click on “volunteers” and get ready for a fantastic day of fun and service. It is an experience you will never forget. I will see you there! CFOV Introduces Valley Non-Profits for Upcoming Amazing Raise—SAS T h e Community Foundation of Ogden Valley (CFOV) would like to introduce the nonprofits serving Ogden Valley to those of you who “Live here, Play here, and Give here” beginning with Snowbasin Adaptive Sports Education Foundation. The Amazing Raise will again sponsor the giving campaign starting July 4 and running through September. Each non-profit will be raising funds to be matched by the CFOV. Snowbasin Adaptive Sports is a nonprofit organization that has provided snow sports opportunities to people with disabilities for the past five years. SAS relies on its partners and donations from the general public to provide various services to their clients. This last year, the partnership with the Community Foundation of Ogden Valley and the “Amazing Raise” event enabled them to buy a Hands On Concepts Bi-Ski that is a state of the art sled with specialized suspension shock absorbers that help the client with balance, a pneumatic lift system that assists the instructor in loading the client, a fully adjustable seat making the client feel more stable, and an adjustable handle for the instructor to use as the client gains control and confidence in the learning process. They also added to their scholarship fund that helps many of their clients experience the freedom of skiing. New this year is SAS’ ability to provide access to the slopes of Powder Mountain. Skiers of various abilities really appreciate the friendly instructors and the opportunity to ski at a different mountain. SAS continues to grow each year thanks to word of mouth. Presently, the program averages about five lessons a day with a client base of about 100 individuals. Most of the clients are from Northern Utah, although they have taught skiers from throughout Utah and elsewhere. They welcome all physical and cognitively challenged people to their ski and snowboard adaptive program with the youngest boarder being four and the oldest skier being ninety. Recently, an 11-year-old girl came to the program with her extended family to learn how to ski in one of the adaptive sleds. Her family had a tradition of teaching the younger generations to ski; from grandpa to dad and on to sons and daughters and grandchildren. This has been a skiing family for years with winter weekends belonging to the mountains. She progressed rapidly with her instructor, as family skied along with her and others watched from the bottom of the slope. She had made several runs when her grandmother asked, “Are you having fun?” With a big grin she responded, “Yes, and I really feel like a part of the family now!” The enjoyment of winter sports to our students is multifaceted. The joy they bring to their families and the staff is priceless. Please support their efforts by donating or volunteering your skills to this program. More information available at <www.Snowbasinadaptive.org> I don’t think any of us on the Ogden Valley Open Market Committee had a clue what would happen when Linda Knudtson had us all meet at the Mad Moose Café a while back. We weren’t a committee at that time; there were seasoned vendors and the curious who Linda had invited. Now, two months later, we are a committee and the Market has a new name, a new logo, and a new time. The Ogden Valley Farmers and Artists Market is now the Ogden Valley Open Market. It will be held on Thursday evenings from 5:30 to dusk in the lot adjacent to the Century 21 real estate office in Eden. The market was held there last year, too. We will be starting this year’s market on June 6. A children’s market will be held twice a month for youth between the ages of 8 and 17. There will be an information meeting at Harley and Bucks on May 15 for all children and their parents, from 7:00 to 9 :00 p.m. We will be talking to the interested and curious about choosing a product to sell, how to calculate your costs, how to market your product, and how to sell at a market. We hope to see many of you there. The market provides a great opportunity to earn some spending money for your summer vacation! A statistic that has influenced and motivated us in forming this committee and putting the market together for its sixth season is, for every $100 spent at a locally-owned business, $68 goes back into the community—and the local tax base. For every $100 spent at a chain store, only $43 comes back to the community (Localfirst.org , Michigan study). It became pretty obvious to us that supplying the demand within our own community would add to the health of our community. We are setting up a platform where growers and artists, big and small, within our valley can sell their produce and goods to their friends and neighbors. We encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity, whether you are selling or buying. We are very excited about the potential of this market; each one of us can contribute to its success. We hope to see you there! If you would like more information about becoming a vendor, please contact us at ogdenvalleyopenmarket@gmail.com or 801686-8483. The Ogden Valley Open Market Committee includes Elissa Ludlum, ShyAnna Chambers, Derek Witt, Tessa Harbertson, and Christine Jouffray. The breathtaking course of the Zion’s Bank Ogden Marathon has been nationally recognized by prestigious publications such as Runner’s World, ranking the race in the top ten for beginners as well as reader’s choice. Runner’s World noted that the race is unusually downhill, has outstanding support from volunteers and sponsors, and plentiful water and aid stations through the course. Since its inaugural 2000 run, the Zions Bank Ogden Marathon has hosted runners from all 50 states and 13 countries. A health and fitness expo will fill Ogden’s Historic Union Station on May 17 from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. The Ogden Marathon is USATF certified and is a qualifier for the Boston Marathon.
