The Common Loon Project Update - Work will resume Monday, April 29 on Wolf Creek Dr. and, also, along 2200 North in Eden. Twenty-two-hundred North begins at the “Y” in the road where the road forks and drivers can either stay to the left and proceed towards the intersection near Valley Market and Maverik, or turn right onto 2200 North and proceed into the center of old Eden at the intersection of Eden Park and Carlos and Harley’s. The newly realigned 2200 North intersection will be closed during daytime hours on Monday, April 29, and Wednesday, May 1, as crews work to improve drainage in the area. Crews will also be doing miscellaneous tasks along S.R. 158, and residents should expect lane restrictions through the area. On Monday, May 20, crews are scheduled to begin applying a chip seal, beginning from the bridge that crosses the North Fork River and on up to the first Powder Mountain gate at the bottom of Powder Mountain Road. The work is expected to take two to three weeks to complete, and temporary lane restrictions will be in place during this period. However, please note that schedules are subject to change due to equipment or weather delays. Project Overview - This project is known as State Road 158 Improvements, Weber County, Utah. Construction began July 25, 2012, and was suspended for the winter in November 2012. Crews will apply a final chip seal coating, complete drainage improvements, and perform miscellaneous tasks in order to complete the project. Star Party On Friday May 10, the first Ogden Valley Starry Nights! Star party will be held at Eden Park at 8:30 p.m. (south end, near bowery). Ogden Valley Starry Nights is a local initiative to help Ogden Valley protect its dark skies against ever increasing light pollution. The group is now a chapter of the International Dark Sky Association (IDA), and recently launched a website with more information about over-lighting in Ogden Valley. For more information, visit <www.starrynightsutah.org> Why a Star Party? Even if you don’t know which end of a telescope to look through, a star party will deliver the up-close thrill of stars and planets, with technology unavailable even just a few years ago. Galileo’s telescope (actually an optical instrument made of wood and leather based upon Dutch-developed spyglasses) was only 8x, likely less than the inexpensive binoculars you probably have around the house, and he certainly made good use of his stargazing experiences. Consider what you might see with the equipment that will be available May 10! Craig Browne, president of the party’s cosponsor, the Ogden Astronomical Society, will be on hand with ten or so other members to provide knowledgeable assistance. Some Weber State University faculty may also be on hand. Craig’s experience in becoming an astronomy enthusiast is typical. It started with a single star party, this one held about ten years ago at Golden Spike National Monument. Craig peered into a pre-positioned telescope, saw the rings of Saturn (countless particles in orbit, which Galileo actually thought were “ears”) and, eureka! Despite neither a previous background nor early interest in astronomy, he became a true fan and is now in his second term as president of the local astronomical society. His favorite planet is, of course, Saturn, and Orion is his favorite constellation because of STAR PARTY cont. on page 3 Michael Engstrom was sworn in as a memMike and KeeNan say they are thrilled to ber of the Huntsville Town Council on March be living in Huntsville, and grateful to be able 7, 2013. The purpose of this project is to reduce and eradicate invasive weeds threatening the native plant community of the local area. Project areas encompass lands bounded by Weber County on the Mt. Ogden front and Ogden Valley area. Invasive weed species threaten the ecological integrity and biological diversity of plant communities within the project area and have caused adverse impacts to recreation, wildlife, and other important social and resource values. Target weeds include, dyers woad, dalmation toadflax, myrtle spurge, leafy spurge, yellow starthistle, whitetop, burdock, and hounds tongue. Control methods for this year’s event will include hand pulling and possible bagging. Forest Service crews will be using herbicides on-site.
