Teachers vote on students in every department, and there is one boy and one girl selected from each grade, who is then recognized as “Skyhawk of the Month” for their excellence above and beyond. Congratulations to the following students: National Junior Honor Society Applications are now available for Snowcrest’s National Junior Honor Society. NJHS is a national organization that focuses on five character traits: leadership, scholarship, service, character, and citizenship. NJHS Membership is an excellent way to show positive character traits and opportunities students have taken advantage of in school. Qualifying and being active in NJHS is also beneficial for those who will be applying for college and scholarships in a few years. It can also provide opportunities for future leadership positions. Only current 7th and 8th graders may apply for membership for the 2013-2014 school year. To apply, students must have a 3.5, or higher, grade point average for both first and second quarters of the 2011-2012 school year, and then maintain this average. In addition, to apply, students must have acceptable citizenship marks, with no “N’s” or “U’s” on their record. Applications for NJHS must be completed and turned in by April 1, 2013. A $10 fee must accompany the application request. An induction ceremony to honor new and continuing members will be held at the end of April, date TBA. DARK SKY cont. from page 1 • Observe Starlight Savings Time: Turn off all unnecessary outdoor lighting after 10:00 p.m. • Either shield your outdoor fixtures or place them on a motion sensor. • Lower the wattage on your landscape lighting and put on a timer that shuts lighting off after 10:00 p.m. • Take a moment to look at the International DarkSky Association (IDA) website (www.darksky. org). View “Lighting Myth #6: Security Lights Prevent Crime” to learn how glaring security lights obscure would-be criminals and, in fact, reduce safety; a motion sensor easily and inexpensively addresses the situation. IDA’S web site includes recommended dark-skyfriendly fixtures. Even the simplest Amazon and Google searches for “dark sky lighting” yield many attractive, inexpensive options. With modest adjustments, we can begin to reclaim our Valley’s starry night heritage.
